iCE Advertisements (ice)
Founded December 1991 in Quebec by Frozen Tormentor with Slam Dunk and Nautilus running the US side, iCE arrived as ACiD's only real rival and stayed that way for fifteen years. The acronym kept drifting (Insane Creators Enterprises, Enterprise singular, sometimes neither), but the work was relentlessly consistent, basically everything ACiD did, with a sharper edge and a more European cast.
iCE introduced monthly quotas (two ANSis or one VGA, December 1992) when most groups were still operating on vibes. They split European and American leadership before that was a normal idea. They absorbed CORP (Finland) into a formal iCE Europe division in early 1993, then pulled in Death, Legacy, Liquid Image, and anyone with talent worth keeping. By 1996 their site ice.org was a peer to acid.org and the rivalry was the scene's central drama.
The group went quieter in the 2000s but never formally folded. The annual iCE Con kept the lights on through the dot-com years; 2002 brought a 10-year anniversary and a Devvies "Best Art Group" award from DeviantArt.
If ACiD is the institution, iCE is the loyal opposition and the scene needed both. What matters is that for the entire peak of the BBS era, iCE made sure ACiD was never alone at the top.
