AWE Lettering (awe)

A specialist's group. From its 1996 founding through January 1999, AWE Lettering did one thing: strict ASCII lettering and typography. The name said it. The output backed it up with 457 pieces in 1997 alone made AWE the single most-prolific group of the year, beating Department 38, Maiden Brazil, and Fuel combined. The pack cadence was monthly, built around editor tna(awe) with contributing artists like Shrimp, Knocturnal, Mr.Wrong, Pariah, Cleaner, Plazz, Haji, Nahal. The first anniversary pack got delayed from September to October, "the lack of time because of school starting back", but the cadence otherwise held tight. January 1999 brought the end: awe-21 was the final pack, and shortly after, Knocturnal and Mr.Wrong split off to form Fokus Fonting. The Mr.Wrong account in the Fokus #1 NFO claimed tna had killed AWE rather than the other way around. Either way, twenty-one packs of pure ASCII letter-craft is the kind of focused career that makes the scene's broader range possible and without crews like AWE doing the typography work, the bigger groups had to invent it themselves.
