This week! I have been mostly eating... boredom
! interview !
Session Start: Wed Sep 22 01:14:36 1999
*** pyro has joined demojournal
ps hello! who are you?
pyro I am the one and only pyromaniac of beyond...
ps oh yeah? and who is that?
pyro my name is paul bragiel, Im 22 years old, and Im a male
exotic dancer.
ps do you have any references from previous jobs?
have you ever danced for someone famous?
pyro one time I danced for margaret thatcher when she was on a
political relations tour here in the united states.
she was talking dirty to me the whole time. it was quite
disturbing.
as for references, Im the closing act at the stud shack
ps ok, whats the normal fee for your services?
pyro I usually charge 200/hour for a private dance.
there are time when I go up or down in price, it depends on
how sexy my clients are.
ps i see i see, ok, what do you do scene-wise?
pyro well Im one of the few sceners left that does pure
organization. it seems like we are a dying breed. I used to
be a pixeler but that was dropped when I found my true
calling.
ps when have you first started your scene career?
pyro I started in december of 93 when someone uploaded Saga by
Dust to my BBS. I havent looked back since.
ps where are you from again?
pyro I am from the city of Chicago, in the United States!
ps united states, well well, what can you tell us about the
scene there?
pyro I can tell you that my group is the only group that is active
that I know of. outside of us its a barren wasteland of lame
tracker groups and even lamer ansi groups. amazingly enough
we all live a short walk/drive from each other.
ps chicago is pretty big! how come there are no demogroups?
pyro this is a question I get asked quite often. my feeling is
that just as people were starting to figure out the demo
scene, the internet came along and everyone got excited in
making internet groups. as a result people joined groups in
which they never saw their fellow members. as we all know,
this is not the environment to make a demo.
I lay a lot of the blame on groups like Kosmic, Hornet, and
other internet moguls of the time.
ps we know that? you could have fooled me
pyro well moving along, look at the some of the greatest demos of
our time. all were made by a few core members being in close
proximity to each other most specifically the artist and
coder
ps so your point is? demoscene sucks couz there are no close
groups of friends interested on demos?
pyro yes... my point is that since everyone spread themselves out
due to the internet instead of developing a group locally,
the scene here wasnt able to develop properly.
ps ok, so lets talk about beyond! who are you and what have you
been doing?
pyro well we are a group that has been around since 1996 and was
created strictly to be a group that was locally based. in
fact every one of the members went to the same university
and lived at the most 8 minutes walk from each other.
ps what have you done?
pyro recently we added a whole new montreal division that has 5
members that are all a subway ride away from each other.
well our productions mostly go unreleased. weve created
1 demo, a few realtime raytracing intros, and the chartsmag
heroin. were also developing on the Game Boy Color
nowadays.
ps game boy color? : what are you doing for gameboy?
pyro to those of you in europe that arent familiar with this
system, its a portable game console from Nintendo.
well we are doing everything from the ever fun intros to our
fulltime project which is a overhead racing game.
ps we have gameboys on europe pyro :P we have capitalism too! :
you recently visited europe didnt you? i know you did what
did you think of it?
pyro well I thought europe was great. I definately could see
myself working/living there for a year or 2. best part of the
trip as usual is seeing the many different women!
ps what countries did you visit? what kind of diferent women?
pyro well I visited 13 countries 14 if you count the vatican
city! as for the different women, well each country has
their own different flavor. it makes you want to taste them
all! if you want, I could bore the readers to death and list
all of them.
ps i heard the italians are really going for it.. got any
luck? who gives a fuck about readers? i want to know
about that italien chick! :P
pyro well it was quite funny... my cousin and I were staying in
Rome and we got totally drunk off italian wine.
ps go on..
pyro we ended up near the Trevi fountain and we found a few
girls... we tried to approach them speaking english, but
alas it did not work... good think my cousin is from Quebec
so we both could speak french...
ps italians know french?
pyro so we would just speak french but add in a stupid Italian
accent... needless to say it worked!
no... but there were many words in common that they
understood... so it was enough to communicate.
needless to say we the all of us drank the less we care if we
could understand each other...
ps hi! whats your name? wanna fuck? your place or mine?
pyro then they invited us to their apartament they were
roomates... and that is where Ill let you guys think about
it!
ps ok, hope you underaged kids dont have any bad-thoughs about
this! so when are you planning to come back to europe?
pyro I think we were attracted to each other simply because we
didnt understand each other and that we could brag to our
friends that we induldged in a foreign treat!
actually I hope to be back in 2 years at the most. I have
family in Poland and Croatia so that is all the more reason
to get back as soon as possible.
Im waiting for an introduction to some cute Portuguese women
on my next visit.
ps that can be arranged
what demopartys have you been to and which ones were
best/worst?
pyro well Ive been at Naid 95 and 96.. Ive also held MANY scene
gathering here in Chicago of around 40 people, and recently I
just went to TO99! I think the best one I went to was Naid 96,
we had 11 people from the Chicago area make the trip... and
needless to say that Montreal is a GREAT city!
after that TO99 roxed big time... I also finally got to meet
my closest scene contact, Sky of Xography after knowing him
since 1994.
ps family reunion : aint that sweet?
pyro another cool party, but not strictly scene related was E3 in
1998.. this time I met up with 30+ demo sceners from all over
the world that are working in the industry... quite a lot of
free boozing at the free parties!
ps what do you think of european partys compared to the ones in
the us?
pyro well they are much bigger... at least the one I went to.
there also are a lot more productions... I was dissapointed
though that I didnt see one person besides Sky open up a
copy of Deluxe Paint or GFX2!!! I definately thought it was
cool that they were selling booze at the TO party place.
Cheers go out to The REW for being the main organizer of such
a nice party.
Session Close: Wed Sep 22 02:02:25 1999
Session Start: Thu Sep 30 00:40:32 1999
ps are you ready for topquiz show contest? :
pyro sure. I always suck at trivia. unless its HARDCORE scene
trivia.
ps 1 whats the capital of madagascar?
pyro fux if I know... why didnt you ask me for the capital of
Mongolia.
ps 2 whats your favorite sex position?
pyro when the chiq is riding me!
ps 3 whats your favorite color?
pyro blue.
ps 4 what is the best country is the world?
pyro KAZAKSTAN! with Poland in 2nd.
ps 5 what is the matrix?
pyro a mathematical term with the letter x in it.
ps do you have a pet?
pyro nope... had a fish, he died.
ps did you gave him a proper burrial or was he flushed down the
toilet?
pyro I gave him up to the toilet gods... they were quite happy.
ps so you said you started on this scene biz on 93! how were
things back then and how have they developed?
pyro things were smaller... almost everyone elite had contact
with each other... now the amount of people are HUGE.. yet
the number of truly elite people is about the same... and
unfortunately many dont have contact with each other.
some of the parties this year seem to have changed that a bit
and the scene atmosphere is back. but there will always be
cheesy things that exist...
ps cheesy things?
pyro well sometimes people get to carried away with being too nice
to newbies or stessing how they are friends with everyone
even tho they have only said 1-2 lines to each other.
ps i see i see : lets talk likes and dislikes!
what are your fav coder/gfx/musician?
pyro well musicians it has to be Scorpik and Jugi...
for coders Im a bit more old school biased... Im a big fan
of Stone of Dust, Jmagic of Complex, and the newest guy is
216 of MFX... this guy rox! and for artists.. I could go for
hours.. but my top 3 are...
1. Ra 2. Cyclone 3. Jamon and honorable mention to Sky!
I forgot one musician.. and I feel horrible about it...
1 all time is Emax of TRSi.. this guy is my god.
ps humm.. you dont happen to know what happened to him do you?
i used one of his tracks on one of my lame demos like..
2 years ago without premission.. i cant find his email
anywhere :P
pyro man... I wish I did... I would love to work with him really
badly... so if anyone is reading this please get me his
contact info.
one time I tracked down his name and that was it. :
he never included anything in his song info texts.
ps i noticed he didnt :P just an emax/trsi somewhere and that
was it..
pyro all i know is hes german. :
ps ok.. reward for finding emax/trsi is up :
now.. what are your favorite intro/demo?
pyro intros.. anything by Complex or MFX... especially BillGForce,
and Gamma.
ps gamma2 kicks rears on big screens :
pyro demos... Im a huge fan of Sunflower and Pulse... and another
one of my cult favorites is Plastik by Chrome
ps why?
pyro it has some cool music, and some great art by Das..
another reward goes out to anyone that know what happend to
DAS! Emax and Das need to be contacted immediately.
ps : what do you do on real life?
pyro well I recently graduated university and am now working for a
HUGE consulting firm called Arthur Andersen... its boring but
pays very well. besides that I like to hit clubs and play
soccer.
ps whats your soccer team?
pyro its a club team called green white its more of a
recreational league now tho since I cant dedicate as much
time to it as I did in school.
ps have you ever won any game?
pyro quite a few... we always seem to do better in the indoor
league tho.
ps : ok, i dont know whatelse to ask! feel like saying
something stupid for the masses?
pyro dont get fat. and try to hit on women telling them how
awesome of a coder you are.. they always love that.
ps ok.. thank you for your time! you can leave your email here :
pyro yea.. mail me at paul@heroin.net or paul@demos.org

GoatAge by Noice final version
Found at www.noice.org
1st place at Remedy99
System requirements:
PII 233 or better, 5.4 MB HD, 64 MB RAM, Windows9x
Ramblings:
Begin September, ps asked me to review GoatAge/Noice, the winner
of Remedy99, as Gnilk/Noice had asked him why we had not reviewed
it. As a matter of facts, I had already reviewed it, but for Static
Line, a monthly e-mag that is less Well known than DemoJournal.
Generally, I dont like to see the same article be it mine or other
peoples in different mags. But because there is a final version
available, I can update the review, so it is not EXACTLY the same
article, and my conscience is clear : Ive simply added things about
the final version in brackets, because 1 Im lazy, 2 it might be
interesting to know what bugs were fixed in the final.
BTW, you can get Static Line at http://www.ic.l7.net/statline
The demo:
This is definitely one of the best demos Ive seen recently,
despite the fact that it is a slow partyversion, and win-only.
The summer has brought us many good demos, but GoatAge is still
very good, and is now much faster. It has a strange kind of feeling,
as there are impressive and well-done effects, but often with funny
details or crazy poems, like: I walk my path/to the virtual
goatland/facing my destiny/at the edge of destruction/reaching out
for my life. On the 3D-side, there is a scary ride in some
metro-tunnels, a strange phong-shaded globe-like thingy with three
mirrors and particle-trails and lots of flares visual overkill, but
I like it a lot, and lots of smaller objects, such as a recursive
cube, usually with a nice background and/or an additional 2D-effect.
The radial blur is a bit over-used sometimes, for example during the
credits. Maybe thats why they show them again at the end, in a
very slow upscroll. There are some nice transitions between parts,
like the strange 2D-plasma that wraps around an object, revealing
the next part. There is one funny hand-draw picture of an angry goat,
the others are photoshopped backgrounds of an astronaut in space, a
human skull with green brains and Leonardo Da Vincis human body
you know, with the arms legs spread and a circle around it.
In addition, there is a new start-up screen now, that most of us
will recognize from Hugi 16 Theres no real theme in it, but
somehow, they seem to fit the demo. The big white font at the end
is a bit ugly due to the anti-aliasing of the horizontal lines no,
sometimes its just not necessary , and the mixed upper/lowercase
letters.
The music:
There are two tunes, the main theme and the outtro. The main theme
starts slowly with a soft melody and slow drums, then it gets more
rhythmical, a bit theatrical at the title sequence. Then we hear a
voice sample something about nuclear weapons, while the goat-picture
is shown :, and after that it burst into a typical demo-soundtrack:
lots of fast percussion together with a catchy tune, with an
occasional break or a slower part, for example in the metro-tunnels.
The endtune is really well done, a nostalgic melody alternated by
military-style drum rolls, with the typical Its all over,
folks-feeling. The main parts of the demo are synchronized to the
music, so due to the swapping-slowdowns, some parts might end too
fast some messages are shown only half etc. Again, this is partly
fixed in the final version. If you click the 64-meg-box at startup,
only half the demo is loaded at the beginning. The other half is
loaded between two 3D-parts, making the screen freeze for a few
seconds.
Overall:
Well, the first time I watched it, I was really curious what would
follow next, all through the demo. No oh no, not again a totally
overused effect! feeling, it really grabs your attention although
in my case, my attention was easy to get as I should have been
studying object-oriented languages and software development II.
I passed that exam! Yahoo! Its varied, never boring, the music is
great and there is some humor in it, albeit rather strange humor :.
The most bad points are on the technical side, the swapping-slowdowns
are really irritating, and sometimes a few meshes disappear DirectX
error?. I hope theyll fix that in the final version. And yes,
they did :. Although you can still see some missing pixels, if you
know where to look. Also, there is no greeting-part, of course this
is not an error, but when I first noticed it, it felt so strange
that I watched it again just to check if I overlooked it. So maybe
its better to wait for the final, but if youre curious: go ahead,
youll enjoy it anyway. And with the final, youve no excuse for
not having seen this. Get it!
Secret part:
To see the secret part mentioned in the info-file, add the word
goatpower on the first line of the README.TXT. It wasnt really
hard to find, as the .exe is not zipped, and you can find goatpower
next to readme.txt in it. The first secret part was rather
annoying to watch, but now there are three secret parts, and if you
like oldskool, the two new ones are great! To see them, do the same
thing as above but with tribute and feting.

! intro !
i originally wanted to review the two great historical
intro entries from ragest 99 called: slumpism/pathos and
azoic/chrysalis. why they are historical? - you ask.
because they saved the dying hungarian scene, and gave us
much feeling and now we see the future in pink and optimis-
tic. bad for you outta magyarorsz g. : congratulation
again to the both groups, names in no alphabetical order:
g?za@pathos code
manka@pathos and autopsy and tpolm music
nobo@chrysalis code

magnetic@teklords and inqisition music
the full article about these kult intros will be avaiable
in the next fleur, hahahh, not here. all what i can say,
check them. avaiable in good stores near you.

goddamn it was for a good reason. These three .XM:s are
filled with fast et hard pounding detroit techno crafted
with tekniq and edge which leave little to be unsatisfied
and even give some extra. Even while this review is just

I have just read Zilog review in DJ58, and want to write some facts:
1. I had to use RAR, because i delivered the demo to party organizers on
two floppies. Inside the RAR files was a ZIP file... I dont know who
sent the RAR files to scene.org instead of that ZIP file...
2. Actually you cant find final version of demo at Hellcores home page,
as editor replied. You can however find it at my personal page:
http://mops.uci.agh.edu.pl/mrock or http://mrock.iscool.net,
if you like pop-up windows with banners . But it seems, that its
not as final as people would expect...
3. Ok, now about my computer :. I got oldnrusty 486dx4/100+16mb.
so, MMX is not used at all!. Zilog does not crash on it in any
configuration xms/ems/w95osr2. I tested demo also on Yezs
Celeron 333, and it also worked fine under dos errmm OK, after
a little bugfix ...
Configuration of Gravity compo machine you can probably find on
Gravity homepage look at demojournals party on! section, that url
is there. Zilog also did not crash on that machine.
4. A week ago, Yez told me, that Zilog now crashes on his machine, after
he installed w98se i understand that crashes when running under win.
Also last days Io/Fuse told me, that Zilog crashes on his computer
p200 or sth in every configuration. And now I have read that review
in DemoJournal and realized, that Zilog crashes on 50 of computers :.
So, in a week or two, I will try to test Zilog on one of these fatal
computers, and personally see, how it crashes. I will put the even
more final version on my page of course, if I find that buggy code
. But now, just keep rebooting. :
