Born at the turn of the century
To a family who lived off the land
She thrived in her humble surroundings
Though her life was not privileged or grand
A learned woman she wasnt
For it was not the way of those days
Yet her wisdom was vast and her thinking so keen
In so many practical ways
Im sure she had grand expectations
And dreams that were never to be
But she was content with her lot in life
And of that the whole world could see
She nourished not one but two families
For her first was taken too soon
Yet when she was needed in times of despair
In her heart she found plenty of room
For the motherless children of a quiet, gentle man
With whom she would share her life
And for many a year, through trials and joy
She was a good mother and wife
Her talents were many, her failures so few
And her heart was as deep as the sea
There was never a doubt where her priorities lay
To her God, to her church and family
Now dont get me wrong, she was stubborn
And she always spoke her mind
And you couldnt get very much past her
Though Ill admit we tried time after time
She ruled her domain with a firm hand
Still her lap was a comforting place
For the scrapes and the tears of my childhood
As shed put a small smile on my face
Sometimes I remember all the things she would do
Or how she struggled so hard her last years
And I wish she were still here beside me
But her memory erases my tears
