Hilarity Ensues
You losers never even knew, you never even realised: in 1990 neoist Stewart
Home proclaimed a general art strike that was in effect until 1993. Can you
think of anything that emerged during that period? The establishment of ACiD
and underground ANSI art perhaps???? Virtua Racing hit the arcades and
Wolfenstein 3-D landed on home computers in 1992. Realtime 3D polygonal gfx and
the 2.5D FPS are the work of genuine pus-dripping scabs and anything built on
their foundations can only be regarded as HIGHLY DUBIOUS. We must burn it all
down to the ground and start anew with a real, non-strike-breaking theory of
computer art at the very real risk of our authentic, genuine artistic souls. OR
IS THAT NOTHING TO YOU???!!
Have you heard the story about the Japanese sword broken then forged anew,
stronger than it ever was before? Well be just like that, only broken over
and over to become an impossibly formidable philosophy of computer art. Every
piece that can be broken we will fix, then break anew in a new place, in a new
way. Our spree of shattered monitors in MIST1116 was only the beginning: we
will impale mice, we will waterboard trackpads, we will cool overclocked
motherboards by immersing them in mixtures of Mentos and Diet Coke. Our
precious original data will be consigned to the care of the 90s demoparties,
who will use their hard drives as shotputs in distance throwing competitions.
None shall be more broken than us! The printer scene in Office Space? A nice
start for a warm-up. Manually reprogramming the singing HAL in zero gravity?
We do it four times before breakfast! Inviting Siri to calculate Pi to the
last digit? We will demand still further precision and exactitude!
Of course, once the hardware is sufficiently tenderized, our own corrupt
artistic sensibilities are next. It is not enough to make art it is not
enough to make anti-art: to atone for our sins we must make anti-anti-anti-art.
But to get there we will have to make a lot of terrible missteps and wretched
mistakes, indeed we will have to explore and map every false avenue before
ruling out by process of elimination the one true path. We have our work cut
out for us. Its time to start getting the little errors out of the way, so we
can graduate to bigger gaffes and boners tomorrow. Once more, into the weeds!
Big ups to our bros in Duo Daughters!
Remember: theres no such thing as success -- only chances to fail in front of
larger and larger audiences!
