LayerONE 2019 Demo Party
Five years ago, Arko designed the LayerOne demoscene board. Its
a limited piece of hardware designed for people to write demos. Seeing
that demo parties were huge in Europe, but not so popular in the United
States, he teamed up with Davo to bring the demoparty experience to Los
Angeles LayerOne information security conference. Last year, I was
brought in to add a textmode element to the competition with a 23 line,
80 column, classic 16 color ANSI restriction for the entries.
This year, the competition featured 36 entries submitted across all
categories. These amazing works of art were from creators who hadnt
touched ANSI in over two decades and LayerOne demo party veterans. We
had entries from all over the world in a stunning showcase of talent.
This year, we added a guest judge - Smooth From Fuel and Araknet.
Sometimes there is an entry that stands out from the rest in its
aesthetics, humor, and ingenuity. Were awarding a Judges Choice
award to BurpsFuels entry Youve been... for rickrolling
everyone with his ANSImation. His entry followed all the rules, but
threw us off when it came time to judge it. Because it was so unique,
it was moved to the WILDCARD category. We regret this change since as
LayerOne is a hacker con, rickrolling via an ANSImation shows true
hacker spirit and out-of-the-box thinking especially in bending the
rules.
Everyone sent in really amazing pieces it was exceptionally hard
to select winners. For the 23 line ANSI category, the winners are
How it all began by The KnightFuel, Mousehunter by
WhazzitBlocktronics, and Glow by NecroFuel. In the wildcard
category, we have BurpsFuels Youve been..., Malcus by The
KnightFuel, and Swansi by Shapes.
The Demo Board winners were Exploration by MFP, Overwritten
by sickpea, and iximeows sick kickflips by ixi meow. While I cant
include those in this pack, check back to our demoparty YouTube account
to see them in action.

Thanks for being patient with our technical difficulties to get
video and streaming going, and for our delays while remote judging.
We would like to also extend our heartfelt gratitude for everyone that
took time out of their schedules to enter the competition. It is so
heartwarming to see an outpour of love for ANSI and ASCII art, from
both NEW and OLD artists in the scene.
