Less is a Bless
If we take a look and see computer society, today... but also in general
the whole society, we will clearly see that as people and as a society
we are in a decline. We have become more sluggish. Smart devices
everywhere but more and more people getting dumber. Even a 1 year old baby
can operate a smartphone, but when you give a 18 years old teen an old
computer with dos, he will look at you as an alien. I understand the
frustration of the teen to operate such an old machine, but i cant
understand and forgive his lack of interest to learn from it, process it,
search for it in the net etc.
This happens to all levels of a society. People are used to fast food,
than grow something with their own hands in their garden. They prefer to
hear and learn everything from the net, behind a screen than to go outside
and talk to others and come in touch with other people. More dangerous is
the lack of interest to make groups, teams and cooperate with others. We
all want to be unique and above others, to show off our ego and be the
best. Or we are just too tired to tolerate others and with the first tough
choice we just give up.
Back in the days, when we didnt have anything too easy for us, we just
did everything. If you didnt know a programming language you got out and
bought a damn book. Now kids, want to go to a school to learn it or watch
as many tutorials on youtube, showing the same stuff again and again...
cause all tutorials on youtube are about getting started... not advanced
stuff. Everyone wants to have Photoshop installed in his computer or the
latest version of Word and other expensive programs, because they fill
that with out them, they will not learn or do good stuff. Even though they
can get Gimp for example, totally free... they prefer to break the law or
give hundreds of credits to buy a program.
Also, today we prefer to get rid off broken stuff, than to fix them. But
its so cheap... and we can get a new one! They say... Sure, for some
people it may be cheap but for others is not. But even though they dont
have the money, they prefer to cut from other expenses to get a new
sofa, car, smartphone, than to fix it. Kids in my neighborhood today, they
dont even know how to repair a flat tire on their bikes! When the tire is
flat, they just get it to the nearest shop and get a new inner tube. The
cost is 5 credits, for one inner tube! With a cost of 2 credits they could
buy a repair kit and fix at least a dozen of holes in an inner tube :O But
no, they dont want to get their hands dirty. Their parents think that if
their kids will get a screwdriver on their hands, will commit some kind of
suicide... i mean.. the situation is hopeless...
Back then you had 16 colors and you made some explicit things... now kids,
teens, men, have Photoshop in their hands and do nothing! Or they feel
unworthy and cant put up with the competition... so they prefer to do
nothing, than something. When you have one or two tools you put your ass
down and your brain working to make more tools, get ideas and do what you
want. But when you have a complete workshop full of tools, you just dont
know what to do with them and your brain gets sloth.
Dont buy everything to your kids... learn them to build things. Even if
you have the money to buy it. The process of making it, will make the kid
smarter and more important happier! It will give a satisfaction for his
self that cant be compared with anything. Learn them old stuff! Yes,
retro-computing, retro-gaming, have more value today, than ever. Not just
for old guys like us. Get a 386DX, with Windows 3.1, a modem and a book
for DOS/Windows and tell the damn teen, that if he wants to see pornhub,
he will have to connect with that system. : hahahaha... He will learn
more for computers in just a couple of days, than going to a school for a
whole semester. Bits, bytes, TCP/IP, Mhz, handshakes, networking setup,
winsock etc... all that things that now days we take for granted and we
just press a screen with out fingers, like some dumb apes :
I would need books to address the seriousness of the problem and i dont
want you to read my awful english : Thats why i figured the title which
is in a way catchy... so remember it and pass it to your kids. Less is
Bless.
