619/BBS Newz????
Were going to try something a bit different with this newz file.
rather than just commenting on the latest pack of whatever, were
going to put in news about the 619 BBSs and its users and Sysops.
First, The latest Renegade update is out and about. Its been what?
Three years right? Its about time! I used to run RG for several
years, but switched to Iniquity after 2 years of no updates and a major
lack of 3rd party programs being released. This update, from just
setting it up on my computer not running it fully. It doesnt seem
like much of an upgrade to me. But, Im not running it as my BBS software
so I cant really comment. Suggestion...Make new ansis if youre going
to run this, the ansis that come with it are really pathetic. Spence
should have asked someone in Awe, Remorse, Fire or some group to do the
ansis for him. Theres a list of supposed fixes, Kokopelli is running
the latest upgrade and he did a short review. Read On!
Renegade Upgrade 4/22/98
Well someone around here still follows Renegade, although I must admit
awhile back I did consider switching to Iniquity, because Renegade hasnt had
an upgrade for a very long time. They used to have upgrades every 4-6 months
and then someone got lazy. Thats alright though, getting lazy happens to the
best of us.. I get lazy, and busy all the time. I think though now, I will
be sticking with Renegade, Im putting my faith in them, perhaps they will re-
lease more updates, more often.
First thing I noticed, is the new version listing. I was curious to see
if this new file on my bbs was in fact what I thought it was, or someone just
rezipping an older version with a new name. RG98101D.ZIP. New different,
better way of naming. The 98 is obviously the year, but what the hell is the
101? Well its julian calendar dating is that correct?, meaning the 101st
day of 1998. Much better form of dating, now I can tell which version is in
fact newer, instead of the old 10-31exp, and 04-05exp releases, which one is
newer? Because of this new way of stamping the upgrades, I imagine we should
be seeing more new releases of renegade. I think they owe us, weve stuck by
Renegade all this time, waiting patiently and bam, they finally give it to us.
But enough on my commentary.
Another thing I noticed, and it makes me very happy, they have a brand
new documentation file. Something that hasnt been seen for awhile. In the
older upgrades, you were told that the old documentation you had would work
just fine. So everything is going perfect now, a new version, a new document-
ation file! Yay.
Copying Iniquity but with all due respect, iniquity copied Renegade,
they have made some of the boring listings a little more interesting. Like
the last callers list, the user list and the bbs listing, just to name some
of them. Just like Iniquity, you can now specify a file ansi or ascii to
go on the top, one on the bottom those dont change and then a format for
the middle, changes with information you specify about each caller. Instead
of using the same old MCIs they have adopted local MCI codes, which resemb-
le the ones used in Iniquity. An example is UN, which is Username, formally
UN. I dont know the necessity for this change, but perhaps it will aid us
in future versions of Renegade.
Now the strings have more control. A few versions back you could control
how much or how little of a particular string you wanted to be seen. This
helped in the creation of ansi files, and the varying lengths of strings and
variables used within them. Now you can set it up to Left Justify, right
justify, or center it. I wont explain how, you can read how to do these
things I discuss in the whatdone file that comes with the package.
The BBS list menu has improved, the storage of the bbs is now completely
configurable. You also have the option of viewing the short list, and view-
ing the long list, and now you can EDIT bbs already entered. Not bad if you
ask me! Of course the idea for this probably came straight from Iniquity.
Too bad the asciis that come with are really generic. That is something you
will need to change! I just read it, the bbs list is auto sorting, no longer
will you have to shell to dos to organize it, it organizes it for you.
Some miscellaneous things were added, like the MCI code TU for total
users, comes in handy when making informative ansis. Another good change, at
least for the SysOp, is that of specifying the file mask you want to upload
to the bbs, no longer do you have to go through everything in that directory,
but you can type in say *.JPG or whatever.
Ive noticed some bugs since I upgraded, perhaps its because I didnt
use everything that came with it. The upgrade came with some extra menus I
dont really want to use, so I didnt run the upgrade program included with
this package. That might be the reason for some of the bugs I have been ex-
periencing, such as users and myself having to type the full word in teleconf-
erence, such as /quit instead of the simple /q command. But if my predict-
ions are correct, there will be a new version soon to fix it!
Call my board cant seem to plug it enough to check out the subtle
changes to Renegade. Wild World now running 98-101 Dos Renegade,
619-660-9014.

Bad Boys Leisure. Its going to be running Iniquity, custom ansis,
the works. Itll start off small of course but Im sure in time it
will grow...The scene in the 619 is still the same. Lame, lame, lame.
Still full of Wildkrap boards with nothing new on them, lazy ops that
dont care and a serious lack of callers. Any real boards out there
in the 619 contact one of us for a review Im tired of calling shitty
boards. Any artists in the 619? Give us a hollar, wed like to hear
from you...
Inn of the Dragon is going pay only on April 20. 10 per 6 months.
No files, only Doors and messages. Hell have inet usenet pay again for
spam and email pay again for personalized spam sent right to ya.
Tell me, is this gonna fly? No files...remember that. When the BBSs
were big pre-inet very few boards were pay. They ones that thrived
either had major chat rooms and/or adult files. Did I mention no
files? No chat either, its a one line BBS like the rest of us.
he figures hes going to pay for college this way, better get a job...

Theres a pre-release of Iniquity lurking about, rumor has it that its
not much of an update, buggy, you get the pix. Hopefully theyll fix
it up before they release it to the public. Christ! its been a whole
4 months from the last release
Anyone have any ground breaking news about yer bbs? Tell us, wed like
to hear about it.
