Guitar Players Anonymous: GPA
I graduated high school in 1987, it may seem to you like a long time ago
but the time has just flew by in the last 11 years. Music played a big part
in my teenage years. I started playing the guitar when I was 14 and have
been playing for 15 years. When I started playing, bands like Motley Crue,
Ratt, Krokus, Scorpions, AC/DC dominated the airwaves. I loved those bands,
and still do. After playing a while I got bored listening to the flavor
of the month hard rock band and steered my listening tastes to more
progressive artists like Rush, Yes, Genesis, etc., When I was sixteen
my guitar instructor told me about a guitarist who was setting the guitar
communitys ear on end. With blazing speed, finesse, style and a heavy
classical influence. He wrote down the name, and I took a stroll to the
record store and bought a tape: Yngwie J. Malmsteens Rising Force.
Mind you, my musical tastes were pretty narrow minded, anything classical
I thought of fat ladies screeching out opera songs.
When I got home I still remember this vividly, I was standing in my
bedroom, and I popped the tape into my ghetto blaster, a very classically
influenced acoustic guitar intro came on, I shrugged and continued on with
what I was doing...Then the electric came on...A searing harmonized melody
line, executed to perfection. Totally clean, yet totally distorted. This
was the guitar god I only dreamed about. I stopped mesmerized by his sheer
control over the instrument. Dark brooding chord progressions, very minor
in its sound, soaring melody lines, and agressive, yet beautiful solos.
My mouth dropped, after years of listening to Eddie Van Halen and Angus
Young this was too much for my undeveloped musicial brain to handle with
only one listen. For the next six months, this was practically the only
album I listened to. I begged my teacher to show me what diminished,
harmonic minor and melodic minor scales were along with inverted chords
and classical chord progressions.
On the day his second album was released Marching Out I was at the
record store waiting for it to open, with my 10.00 in hand tapes were
7.99 back then no such things as CDs.
That first song I heard was Black Star. The song that changed my life forever
I consider it one of his best compositions. To this day, I eagerly await the
release of Yngwies latest album. Damn the critics and the fly by night
guitar fans...This is truly an artist that has affected my life like no
other musician can. Passion, grace and fire are the three words best
suited to his music. There isnt, nor will there ever be another artist
that could so completely affect my life and my musical style like Yngwie
Malmsteen has.

Pay Boards are a Thing of the Past
Pay boards! This is the late 90s boards are fast dying, and you
want to run a pay board? Whats with that. Now the board I am talking
about is the only pay board Ive ever been on at least in 1998. Im
talking about Happy Go Lucky. Its a board for your not so legal files,
and to top it off, you have to pay to get those not so legal files. I
remember calling there, and the Operator of it had it so that those
wanting adult files would pay. Fine, I see no problem with that, al-
though there are other boards around willing to offer the same things
for free Wild World 619-660-9014. My point still stands though,
there are no longer thousands of bulletin boards out there, its not
like there are tons of users, willing to pay for access to your board.
Im not saying Happy Go Luckys board is not worth paying for, if any
board around today was worth paying for access, I think his board is
the number one choice. Running Vision-X I believe I havent called
in a long time, 2 lines, lots and lots of room, fast connection, all
kinds of new files, good selection, and he makes cd roms for you, for
a charge as well. Ive thought of charging for access to my board, or
running donations but if you run a donation program, no one ever don-
ates because they dont have to, but the response is really low. One
time some guy sent me a cd rom with Corel Draw on it, an earlier vers-
ion, it was appreciated. Another user of mine, sent me 7 dollars, it
was all she had to donate. The only reason I had wanted donations was
to put in a second line, at the time, back in the day when BBSs were
kicking, I had lots and lots of calls, enough calls that even 60 minute
time limits werent enough to keep it from being busy all the time.
Ive heard that Happy Go Lucky isnt doing too well now, but Im sure
we can all relate. Why call there when you have a good free board
such as Metal Edge 619-423-4970 to call? I remember when I first called
Happy Go Lucky, my thoughts were, Wow, this is a really cool board, Im
lucky to have been given the number to it. He was nice enough to give
me an account that would expire in about 3 months. Maybe it wasnt in-
tentional, maybe thats just the way Vision-X or Vision2 works? With
my own board to work on, I found myself too busy to call a board, know-
ing well that my account would soon expire. I was going to ask him if
he allowed visiting sysop access, but my interest in that board died
very quickly. To top it off, a few months after I had decided to call
it, word came back that it was a pay board. Wait, did I read what you
said correctly, you just said it was a pay board right? How can that
be? Its an illegal-files type board, and now he wants to charge you?
Im sure you can imagine what I mean by illegal-files, referred to as
Warez, commercial software, NPD non-public domain, etc. So this guy
is getting ILLEGAL files, and then charging you to download them, whats
the point of this? Sure there are risks to running a board of that
nature, but now youre going to charge for something? If Bill Gates
ever found out, the sysop would be in a LOT of trouble. Hes charging
for software that someone else wrote, and not giving the money to the
person that wrote it. Making money off of someone elses idea. Sure
pirating copying illegal files is stealing, but the intent is that
people will like the software and perhaps go out and buy a real copy
of the program, of course I cant say everyone sees it that way, but if
it worked that way, provided everyone was honest, wed have a good con-
cept going. Anyhow, Im off on another tangent. The last pay board
I was on, was about 3 years ago, Oasis. In my opinion it was worth it,
type of pay board, you paid for your online time in the form of credits.
The prices were extremely reasonable, of course with the internet boom,
his board Oasis wasnt doing too well, because people werent paying so
much for online time anymore. This bbs Oasis was worthy of a charge
board, it boasted 21 14.4 lines, 28.8 was still pretty new. It was
local to a lot of people, located somewhere in Hillcrest. The people
on it were pretty cool for the most part, they werent too weird, Im
sure you know what Im talking about if you ever met someone off of a
BBS. That was the only bbs I ever paid to call. I was just thinking,
I dont think I would ever pay to call a board under 3 lines. Maybe I
shouldnt say that, but if I were a user calling my own board, I wouldnt
donate or pay either, so I guess thats why I understand if no one wants
to pay to call my board, its alright though, it doesnt offend me or
anything. Now that the Internet has done its thing to the local bbs,
we should be concerned about how long the bbs scene if you even believe
one exists will be around. I myself will do whatever it takes to pro-
mote whats left of the scene. Charging for access to my bbs is NOT
the answer, I can see someone charging for their bbs, and losing 10
people to the internet. Its simple, call a bbs that charges, or pay
a little bit more and open yourself up the internet, that offers so
much more?! Im not supporting the internet, I still like the down
to earthness of a local bbs, the atmosphere is unsurpassed, you wont
find the atmosphere any where else, I can almost guarantee it, hell,
Ill even GUARANTEE it! I cant just rag on Happy Go Lucky, theres
another pay board out there, I call it once in awhile, BiLs Board.
BiL has been running his board for over 6 years, so I admire the fact
that hes stuck with it. At one time it was even 4 lines. I believe
now its 2 lines, read my review in 619003.zip. I guess its common
with pay boards, my account also will expire on BiLs board, but you
can Validate yourself over and over again. I dont know how good my
access is, I cant really tell. I cant remember his rates, but
theyre not too resonable if I remember correctly. Word is that his bbs
might not be around too much longer either. Ive heard him mention that
he wants it to stay up, but someone else will have to have it in their
house, and run it for him. Yeah right! If someone is going to go
through that expense, they might as well run something they want to run,
something that will have a better chance and WONT charge for access.
Anyhow, Ive done my griping for today, go out, have fun and call
a FREE board! Oh yeah, if I should ever charge for access to my board,
please, by all means send me this article and you have my permission to
knock some sense into me. I think what that means, is that I WONT be
charging for access. Oh yeah, another reminder, I do have adult files,
and I will never charge, but I may ask you to send me proof of age.
Kokopelli, SysOp of Wild World 03/20/98
The Ansi tutorials:
Ive been doing ansi tutorials 2nd one in this issue for people that would
like to do ansis for their BBSs. We all know if you ask someone from an
ansi group no matter how good or bad they are youll have to pay for it
or theyll turn you down. Remember the irc files? Dont go asking them
on the irc...youll get slammed then kicked off.
My point of the tutorials...I am proof that ANYONE can draw ansis. You just
have to start at the beginning and take some time with them. Take a look
at some of the other artists that release and take note of how they shade,
shape their letters, blend their colors etc., Its easy really.

Guitar Tab OLGA
OLGA stands for Online Guitar Archive. It has links to their mirror sites
which hold 30,000 guitar and bass tab. Some of the mirrors are ftp sites
some are web pages many of which, have been closed from threats of lawsuits
from the Harry Fox Association which is a copyright office. New mirrors
are being opened, but the rate that theyre being closed is staggering.
emi has claimed that guitar tab, are copyright infringement and we shouldnt
have an archive where we figure out songs usually wrong and incomplete
and put them up to help us play our favorite songs.
To make matters worse, OLGA has set some new standards for archiving the
tabs. In order to get your tab file archived, you must include the lyrics.
Without lyrics, no matter how complete, or accurately transcribed, they wont
accept it. Ive noticed a trend with this more crd files, with just the
chord names with complete lyrics. Leads left out, riffs not transcribed,
but dammit! The lyrics are in there!!! Lyrics can be found inside the
CD insert or the tape cover, guitar tab isnt found in the CD booklet
anywhere. Anyone can type up lyrics, figure out the basic chords that
are being outlined by the bass, but its a real art to be able to actually
figure out riffs and leads. I do transcribe, I usually leave out the
lyrics for obvious reasons, transcribe as many rhythm riffs that I can
pick off, and try to get at least the main theme of the leads. Is the art
of riffing dead or are guitarists getting pitifully lazy in their
transcriptions? Is there no new music with guitar leads and fills?
Just a suggestion, if you want to tab, do it completely and as accurately
as you possibly can. Its never going to be 100 accurate, even the mags
dont get it all, but get as much as you can...remember, its a learning
experience.
