619 - Rag
The 619 Erag is an electronic ascii magazine devoted to the 619 BBS scene
and the callers of the 619 BBSs. This is not a regular mag, we put it out
when we get done Hopefully thats every other week. Enjoy!
The MP3 Contriversy
We all know about Warez, illegal/pirated software...You can find it on
warez BBSs, the irc on the internet and ftp sites. Bill Gates is after
everyone for this and theyre shutting down web pages, Cox cable cable modem
is busting groups and couriers by keeping track of the amount of data transfer. e next thing is MP3s. An MP3 is an entire song, ripped from an audio
CD, turned into a wav, then compressed/encoded into an mp3. The wav files
are usually 35-70 meg for one song, but when you compress it into an MP3,
it brings it down to a 2-4 meg file. You dont need an sound card to rip
an audio CD, and a program like WinDAC will copy the song directly off of your
CD onto your hard drive as a WAV file. You then encode it into an MP3 and
voila!!! A CD quality song. Sounds crazy? Its true...But, rather than
the software companies sweating it out, the record companies are wiping their
brows over this, while the general music listening public is drooling over the
fact of free songs and not having to shell out 16.00 for each CD. About 15
megs of your hard drive for an entire CD. Sounds good? You can find MP3s
on BBSs, ftp sites and the irc, but I wouldnt bother with the web, the
record companies are busting people left and right for copyright infringement nd the web, being easy to search and access no logons or passwords are
being the first to get busted. They havent really established that MP3s
are illegal, its still up in the air, like midi, guitar tab, lyrics,
Game Emulators and hacking files, but they threaten the web page owners
with multi million dollar lawsuits if they dont take them down. EMI did
a similar thing with guitar tablature files. Someone figures out a popular
song on the guitar or bass, writes it out in tablature form not sheet music,
which is just numbers frets and posts it on the internet or a bbs. Mind you, ost of the guitar tab is 85 incorrect, its supposed to just help you to
play your favorite song...Even the guitar magazines arent 100 correct.
But, EMI contested that this is copyright infringement, and has even gone
as far as threatening to sue kids singing songs around a camp fire...Sounds
ridiculous? It is... Anyway, my point of this long winded story is this...
I dont think that anything save warez is a copyright infringement if its
not charged for.

The Ansi Scene
The ansi scene, for those of you that dont know what this is: ACID,
ICE, Maiden Brazil, AWE, CIA, Fire etc.,. Groups that draw and distribute
ansi/ascii/lit/rip/vga art and some include sound files in their packs.
Im not an expert, Ill tell you that right now, I only know from what
I see, and what Ive heard about the scene in the past. I draw for
RioT and Warlock, but dont consider myself part of the ansi scene.
Ive seen every ansi pack from the first ACID pack, and the ansi art form
has come a long way. From the basic no shading ansimation to beautiful
pix with detailed shading, and fonts that look better than any VGA font.
There are some artists that have a lot of talent, and theres those that
dont. I consider myself at the bottom of the ansi talent list, and I
could name quite a few egomanical people as well. If youve read the
second 619 mag, you probably stumbled across the irc file, and the one
in this pack. Funny? Well, its sad really. Here are a bunch of kids,
thinking that theyre some sort of god, acting like 2 year olds, throwing
tantrums that theyre better than John Doe etc.,. Ive noticed, that the
really good artists dont hang on the irc...Does that tell you something?
It should. The whole thing has gotten off track, being in a group I
thought, was to express your creativity...not to make you believe that
your god. Any art form, whether its drawing or music, is a way to
express your creativity...Competition is healthy, it sometimes can be a
good reality check, but the main competition should be with yourself,
to always be better than you were the last time. My point of this?
Before you dis someone, take a good look at yourself, there will always
be someone better than you at something, and youll be better than
someone else at something, but...The difference between you and John
Doe, is your personality, which reflects in your art. Thats what
what makes art so great.

Ever heard this before....Make twenty million dollars in fifteen
seconds guaranteed!!!! Or how about this.....Lonely?...I can make you feel
like the Super Stud only you think you are....OOOOHHHH BAAABY!!!!
Fifteen seconds is the perfect amount of time! I can be filthy
rich beyond my wildest dreams and be completely exhausted by some 80 year
old woman with a great voice saying disgusting things into my phone. Boy,
I cant wait to see whats in my e-mail tomorrow! Slam me, wham me, SPAM me.
52 messages in my e-mail box and 3 of them are from people who have a brain.
Are there that many desperate people out there that actually want to get
this trash sent to them or are we being inundated with filth and moronic
crap from people who have no sense of decency or courtesy? What happened to
Netiquite? Why are the servers allowing this to go on despite the fact that
they get thousands and thousands of complaints every day. MONEY! Human
garbage also pays for internet access and their money is green too. Sad but
true, kiddies. The only thing we can really do is delete it....right? Maybe
not. We can fight fire with fire. I found a man who hates spam like every-
one else and figured out how to trace it back to its origin. What Im
thinking is if we find the source then a few thousand of us can send a few
thousand e-bomb messages each and bury them in there own dirt. Its not
like Im against free enterprise. Im definitely for it, but I have a
no soliciting sign on my door cuz I dont want to deal with salesman. If I
want to buy something I go to the store. If they have something to sell they
can put up a web page or pay for banners on someone elses site. Now thats
real free enterprise.
So heres the scoop. If ya wanna know how to get to the source of
spam then I will put the instructions in a future issue of this e-rag. Im
not going to put the effort into it though unless I get enough responses
from you people out there to warrant it. If I do get enough of you backing
me up then Ill write it up and write up a plan for all of us to use against
these jerks. We shouldnt have to put up with this. After all we are payers
too. So, if ya want to do something about it then e-mail meno spam please.
