Part 4: How the game industry is affected

Microsoft is just one example of how piracy has helped the industry. Another important aspect of software industry is computer games. How many times have you shelled out $50 or more to buy a so called "best-selling" game and after 10 minutes of playing, realized that it's really a piece of trash? Or maybe it is a good game, but it just does not suit your taste? Don't you wish you could play it beforehand, to see if you really like it or not? Yes, it's true the game companies are aware of this situation and sometimes put out demo of the game for the consumers to try out. Despite the attempt by the game companies, a demo is just a demo, not 100% represents actual game. In fact, a demo might just presents the good side of the game, but not the bad side. Producing demos is exactly what the pirates have been doing and they do it better than any other game companies. Of course, what gives you the taste of the actual game better than the actual game itself. Then how does it help the software industry if people already get the actual game? Well, due to the high capacity of the CD-ROM, all computer games right now consist of several parts: animation, speech, music and actual game-play. It is impossible for the pirates to copy the whole CD and release it to the public. So instead of copying the whole game, they give the public the most essential part: the game- play. This means the public will not see the cool introduction nor hear the digitized speech, but they still can play the game. Once they think this game is enjoyable and suit their style, and they want to see more; they will just go out and buy a legal copy of the game and hence enjoy all the nifty features not offered by the pirated version. This sure sounds like a pretty fair deal to both the consumers and the game companies. For the game companies, if the game is good, you get the money, if the game is bad, you do not make any money. For the consumers, instead of relying on some commercial advertisement and waste money on bad games with good advertisement, the consumer can finally enjoy the game they like and also help the companies that actually produce quality games but without the good advertisement.
