Release notes:
His recent appearance at the Seattle Symphonys performance of the
music of Frank Zappa left little doubt: Steve Vai is one of the most
talented guitar players currently torturing an axe. Consider that,
while still in his teens, Zappa handpicked him to play the parts
Zappa deemed too difficult to play himself. In the 80s he provided
some of the biggest heavy metal acts in the world. Then theres his
flourishing 90s solo career with releases from his own band, Vai, as
well as instrumental records like Alien Love Secrets.
On his latest release Vai plays almost all the instruments excepting
drums on a handful of tracks, played by former Wild Dogs/Bad English
drummer Deen Castronovo. Vai lets his guitar do all the singing.
This is not a particularly challenging record for the listener,
unlike his work with Zappa, but it is a thoroughly entertaining
showcase for some very tasteful guitar work with minimal sheer
wankery. Alien Love Secrets even includes a tribute to Jimi Hendrix
called The Boy from Seattle, in which Vai uses a clean, warm
Stratocaster tone and Hendrix-like phrasing to evoke the kind of jams
Jimi might be working on today were he alive. This is a lively,
wonderful record from a musician who has completely mastered his
instrument.
