Although their specific date of birth is Û° ±Û not known, it is approximated to have been some time late in the ² °Û year of 1989... Û °Û Û Û Aces existed in one form or another from 1989 - 1991. Formed Û Û by two people, Zyphril and Chips Ahoy of San Jose, California, Û Û Aces of ANSi Art ("") was indisputably the first underground Û Û or "elite" ANSI group, and possibly the first organization of ANSI Û ² artists ever assembled. Their motives for the creation of this Û Û group were simple: "put out some cool artwork", "help out sysops" Û Û and get name-brand recognition. Strength in numbers was realized. Û Û Û Û In September of 1990, several key players from the group left ² Û to form one of their own. This dealt a devastating blow to Aces ² Û and for several months after it was unclear whether or not the Û Û group had seen it's last days. Something happened; a local artist ² Û by the name of Mondoman came aboard, releasing a fury of ANSIs Û Û and arguably some of the best ANSI animations seen in . New Û Û life was breathed into the group, attracting others once more. Û Û Ý Û The selection of ANSI artwork included in this archive, while Ý Û authorized, is partial. This is a modest representation of what Ý Û was drawn by artists of this era but is by no means definitive. Û Û While there are 84 ANSIs and 2 executable ANSI loaders included, Û Û much artwork is missing from the likes of Chips Ahoy, Icepirate, Û Û The Beholder, even myself. Û Û Û Û You will find that each of the artists represented have a Û Û distinctive style. Many of these ANSIs are animated or make Û Û creative use of the blinking attributes. Most Windows based ² Û viewers show only the final page of an animated ANSI, effectively ² Û stripping out all the animated action preceding the last screen, ² ² and also tend to disable the blinking attribute all together. Û° ² It is recommended that a capable viewer such as ACiD View 4.36f °Û ² (included) be used in full-screen text-mode for proper display. °Û °² Û °Û By the time had faded away, so many events which would Û Û change the face of the art scene had yet to happen. There were no Û Û "VGANS" collages of ANSI, or decent ANSI viewers, let alone one Û Û which supported real-time VGA-mode down-scaled browsing of an ANSI. ² Û To display an ANSI, one would "type" it from DOS, or view it the ² Û way it was meant to, while connected to another BBS. To imagine Û Û what something might look like in VGA mode, the only thing one Û Û could do was to distance themselves as far away as possible from Û Û their monitor and use some imagination, one screen-full at a time. Û Û No SAUCE descriptions to declare the title, author, and organization Û Û to identify your artwork, just eight mighty characters prepending Û Û the de facto file extension of dot A-N-S. Most importantly in Û Û the context of this writing, the concept of an artpack, let alone Û Û an artpack comprised of new artwork released on a monthly basis Û Û had yet to be seen. Relatively speaking, this is the most Û Û comprehensive collection of artwork by Aces in circulation, and Û Û the one and only pack to stand out proudly in our 1991 directory °Û ² on the ACiD Artpacks Archive: Û ² ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/artpacks/1991/. Û ² Û Û These ANSIs represent a sign of the times, but mean a lot to Û Û me in other ways. ACiD's lineage traces directly back to Aces of Û Û ANSi Art. If it weren't for that precursory inspiration in 1990, Û Û I can only imagine how different things would be today. Û Û Û Û I owe a great many thanks to many people who assisted in Û ² one way or another with the assemblage of this set. Especially Û ± when you take in to consideration that these files are now Û ° teenagers themselves... °Û ² °Û Û Sources included: ° °° °°°° °°°°°° °°°°°°°°°°°°±±°°°°°°°±²²²Û ² °Û Û - Private collection by Mondoman (former Û Û and ACiD Artist) Û Û - AAA.ZIP, a very small and unauthorized sampler Û Û released by Cavalier (former CCi Net administrator °Û Û and RNDserv bot operator on the #ANSI of yore) Û Û - ACID.ZIP (also known as ACID1.ZIP, ACID-1.ZIP), Û Û an unofficial release of early ACiD and AAA artwork Û Û by an anonymous individual.
