I've been too lazy to do just about anything. =====! interview !============================================================= *** Now talking in #demojournal *** virne has joined #demojournal okay. so first of all. tell us about yourself. i am still jani of lainesalo. also known as virne of koma. 22 years old student of mediastuffshit in finland. coder, designer, graphician, video editor, all that. so we could start from the history.. when coma was born, where you with from the beginning? nope.. my friends had nice little crack/cheat/trainer/demo group called Dante in 93. and...? i joined them because i was only one who had Gravis Ultrasound card.. so ofcourse i could do a Gravis Ultrasound card.. so ofcourse i could do a modplayer for them. hehehe. sounds like a good reason to me. :) but Dante died and boys formed C.O.M.A. i hated name C.O.M.A. and they had no good ideas and no one who did something so what does C.O.M.A actually stand for? talented people but nobody did do anything final Community Of Moral Advancement Summer 94 we had meeting and i was there too.. not as a member but a fan of Afri Cola.. our favourite cola. haha. :) they wanted somebody to do a meeting intro to them and i said "yes" and i did it is still damn good product so meeting intro was your first prod for coma? youngsters should learn true.. and that was also first coma product.. not counting trainers etc. actually it was Koma.. we had that "K" fashion before Komplex or other "K" wannabies :) [editor: i thought you started to use koma with 'k' not until tg98.] okay. so when did coma really reached for the all peoples consciousnessess first time? was it stikman's world? in finland we were famous because we were on many parties and we knew people that was something i didn't know. our first bigger hit was actually "Rauha Teille" demo with religious thoughts and ideas.. and with bad music. that made us famous in finland and outside too.. but ofcourse Stickmans World was final breakthrough yes, i can surely imagine this assembly people watching the intro compo (hell, i was there, too) and seeing all those toruses and after that suddenly this sticky dancing man pops up on the screen and takes a beer from the fridge. :) yep. that McGurk got that brainstorm of vector figure with movements from videotape but after that came paimen - perhaps (still) your best known demo all around the world... there was few nice nice nice demos inbetween but paimen was a chart hit. all demos very different but still same kooma.. you wanna know the secret why paimen is so good ? secret is Juhla Pi party was delayed for a week so i got week extra to tweak everything.. and still made it ready at the party place. so what do you mean by 'chart hit'? did it appeal to those normal demoscene people as well? all i do remember from 96's it was quite a time for those brave cool new 3d worlds (well, caero was released at tp5 and so on).. people liked it.. it was on some charts at the time and i got fan mail all over the world. cool. people liked it because it was so "musicvideolike" and what is the secret behind this "you lost by one point the juhla 3.14 to halcyon" thing? :) yes because one of our members was too drunk to vote and halcyonies stole votesheets.. (we didnt ofcourse not.. never.) hehe. i just wonder if they stole our votesheets (which were indeed stolen). it might be us too. stealing of votesheets is great hobby and part of demoscene culture. when everybody is doing that its not a problem. unfortunately they don't use votedisks and sheets much anymore at parties.. no we just have to steal votekeys and threaten lamers okay. many people have claimed that coma demos are not demos at all but "pure video crap". how do you think about this subject? there we come to the idea of demo what is so wrong to make demos with video images included? thats same question that some people dont like lyrics in demomusic hehe. but i think people liked etc. 303 quite much. if idea of demo is to show some new technologies and to make a good show in given limits then it is totally ok to use video or whatever in demo if it just fit the limits. 303 wasnt bad but "Mina Omistan" by Movement and Groos band rocks more :) even though axel had no own videofootage but thats a different thing i have to admit i've never seen mina omistan, or at least i don't remember anything of it. [editor: but the song rocks, every should have it!] so now we come actually to your favourite demos and stuff.. you like old melon demos much? mina omistan is one of my favorite demos along with 242 by Virtual Dreams/Fairlight :P it's not too hard to imagine why is that. :) well melon stuff.. melon stuff was ok. ninja etc.. but actually melon was never a big favourite. so what was? and 242 was a mainly a joke and ripoff but who cares Polka Brothers.. that is. and some Complex stuff ofcourse Spaceballs with State of Art and 9 fingers nothing good on pc? oh, that's harsh. Nooon and Orange stuff was good (i was hoping something like deep psilocybin mix by cncd but...:) ofcourse CNCD .. forgot psilocybin mix YES.. Closer YEEEES.. Killer.. good and suprisingly Tint by The Black Lotus.. damn long and too colorful demo but it somehow rocks. okay. not too big deal, who wouldn't forgot the mammoths.. it seems like tint is almost everybodys favourite.. CNCD - cemetary of the mammoths.. that was a sign at Groos door i think it was their slogan once, too? yep okay, enough talk about favourite (amiga) demos. what about coders/gfx/musicians. do you have any favourites? coders.. well.. jmagic, saviour, case and juliet, karl.. other old gurus.. i know what coding is so i dont have that much favourite coders. graphicians.. der piipo atleast, antony and those. musicians.. groo and other cncd musicians ofcourse, dune, yolk, moby and so on. so it seems like all your heros are from early/mid 90's. are there no good ones left anymore? there are.. but somehow they seem not that good anymore.. quality is not that high it should be. gimme some names so i can give striking comment about okay. so what do you think about sunflower? group or demo? havent seen demo at all. well i mean zilog and wonder by sunflower. zilog was nice.. havent seen wonder. but is that very far from example Closer ? zilog is very good, but it is just a demo.. nothing more. stuff people did 4-5 years is mainly the same we do now.. just more faces and bigger resolution. well i don't have tnt either so i can't see wonder at home (i've seen it just once) but it's like reeeeeally beautiful morphing 3d stuff and beaaaaautiful pictures by visualize and looks so damn nice. beautiful yes - and i'm not the right person to say what if a demo has good plot or design or not. for just looking nice is not enough. visualize (forgot to mention as my favourite graphician) is damn good but he sometimes lack ideas.. just making damn nice pictures. he was offering me those same old eyes and woman heads when we had our Jamm R. project.. damn. hehe. that must have been dull. :) plot is not needed.. or design as people think of design.. i mean there must be some meaning or idea to make it art and longer lasting than just few times on monitor. i have problems with that too so i dont blame people how many demosceners can say that they have had their demos on art exhibition.. i can. [editor: how about katastro.fi?] people outside demoscene cant see anything else in demo that it is nicelooking.. they forget it after that. yes - do like i say - not like i do it by myself... isn't that a christian philosophy? which reminds me you have used quite much (at least on you're earlier demos like paimen) religious text.. not that much as people think.. i still consider myself as a christian. maybe demos after control came more personal than just shouting against society. and after that just void.. not much ideas for text. too happy life. yes. it has almost became like trademark for coma. you have weird video stuff and weird texts and that's at least the thing that people seems to expect from you nowadays... i think people have get bored to it.. me too. though i am more bored to traditional demos. :) i can agree with that one. people have got bored with every kind of demos. nothing is fresh no more. i try make different things.. like you can see from comas demolist.. stikmans world, 60brw, W45, paimen, virne etc.. i am quite out of ideas to make really different demo.. i have some ideas but i always lack time. so is the others copying your style or you merging to the mainstream which causes this that you haven't released anything really differend lately? or am i talking bullshit now? maybe both and bullshit and some people do still differend demos. like moral hard candy was quite fresh one. though now it seems like everybody's copying now them aswell. i have seen people using exactly the things i have made years before.. and not only in demos.. sometimes in tv i can some stuff thats like straightly from my demos. :P horrific. :) or then i go just my way too far away from others so people cant see that i am actually doing different things all the time. okay. i think we've talked enough about demos. lets talk about beer and women at this point it's time for demojournal quiz. :) doh (we can talk about that later) 1. so the legendary question which reveals have you read past articles of demojournal. what is the capital of madagascar? uganda no, that's another country. :) turenki okay. it seems like you should read some more old demojournals... i never read interviews to this point :) question 2. what is best party ever you've attended? So many nice but so different parties.. Lets say Juhla 3.14 .. traditional good nice small party with everything we need. sounds nice enough to me,. 3. what's you're favourite colour? forest green hmm. yoy wouldn't happen to like type'o'negative? (consider this as question # 4..) not a great fan but they have correct music style just becouse they seem to like forest green, too. blah. enough these stupid questions aswell. you mentioned early in this interview you've been in demoscene since 93? what was your first demoparty actually? Aggressive/Depressive autumn 93 i had no money to go to assembly93.. (not a reason nowadays) then straight to TheParty93 bustrip damn. you were at the first aggressive? now i'm jealous. yep. you should be you've been at tp quite many times, too? dante released their first and last dentro there :) every year since 93.. i think that makes me finn that holds record for being at theparty. well, since now it's 7th time in the row, it's quite hard to break that record.. and i am proud of it The Party is the very best big party in the world. dont know about the bigger parties in central europe.. but the party is BIG. though there has been quite much critism about the party and their rules.. like rule that child porn is not allowed ? evil organizers indeed. like this win/dos/linux democompo division sucks etc. well. rules are rules. they have their rules. and for me they are not bad rules. but i mean feeling.. they have right attitude yep. i think i know what you mean. but i think this interview is coming to it's end. do you have anything you would like to say yourself? i love myself anything else? :) lets drink at the party now we're talking about the real thing! forgot to talk about beer and women.. :( ok. let's do it shortly. what's your favourite beer? karhu is alltime favourite and yes, we can forget the girls this time. damn girls so perhaps it's really time to quit this interview. so we can drink beer and talk about girls at the party this was long and i had still soooo much to say. nice talkin to you. i hope someone will get something about this. :) maybe i will tell all about everything in my own website soon. yes, so if you want to see virne live (and talk about women and beer, perhaps) come to tp9 and meet him there! we're off now. bye! bye *** virne has left #demojournal (virne) =====! demo !================================================================== Could be you by Acid Rain (party-version) Found at www.scene.org, in the incoming/Dreamhack directory. By the time you read this there will probably be a normal directory. The filename is crime.zip. 3rd place at Dreamhack'99 (non-accelerated) System requirements: Fast pentium + MMX, 32 MB ram, 9 MB HD, Vesa 320*200*32, Midas-supported soundcard. And if you're one of those dinosaurs that do not load a diskcache when booting under DOS (like me), you better start smartdrv. Otherwise the loading will be awfully slow. The demo: "Could be you". Not the name of a cheesy love-song (yeah my brain makes strange associations :)), but the name of a dark story-demo that handles about crime, robbery and murder. We watch an intelligent police-database that's trying to solve a crime by analyzing lots of full-screen video- fragments (that explains the 9MB size). Between those, it shows some output in the typical way that we are used to see in hi-tech movies: in little boxes with moving stripe-edges, and letters that appear so slowly you can follow reading them (even when the system can handle full-screen video :)). 2D-effects are sparingly, mostly for transitions: a dive-into-a-repeating-texture (it's at the start, if you don't know what I talk about :)), a water+bump effect, TV-snow/lines, horizontal fades,... Polygon-based 3D is even rarer, but the particle-city looks great and the voxel-pilar at the end is one of the best I've seen. Regarding still pictures, there's a nice AR logo at the start, but the rest are photos that are barely visible due all the effects on top of them. The joys of alpha blending . The music is a dark tune that varies a lot, because it follows the action so well: slow when the system initializes, fast drums when searching through lots of data, dramatic synths when searching the killer... It's more a soundtrack than a independent tune, with soundeffects like cameras zooming and such. Worth the download ? I've a feeling that some people will dislike this demo for two points: - It has a (kind of) story, which is a real thrill the first time you see it, but of course less when you watch it again. - It has lots of videos, and that's still "not done" for the die-hard everything-should-be-realtime sceners. IMO they don't hurt the demo severely. In the non-video parts, there is so much going on at the same time that you can watch it several times, and still notice new things. When watching it the 4th time, I finally recognized the strange 3D-object in the background during the DNA-search as a DNA-helix :) The design rocks, with original details like the video start-pause symbols or the greetings hidden inside the suspects-list [editor: well try to find the real hidden greetings part ;], and the zipped size is only 5 MB so it's not that bad. The moral at the end doesn't add anything for me, but hey, I'm bad :) Recommended for everyone who is not paranoid. Seven Note to the editor: Melwyn, you're in Acid Rain, right? And you are the guy with that big knife in this demo? Yes? Oh, I was just curious, really. That will not influence my review, of course... [editor: yep. it's me. but they never caught me - so beware...] =====! intro !================================================================= Clean by Replay 64k intro at Dreamhack 1999 Programming and Graphics: Whisker Music: Distance Clean is the 64kb intro by Replay from Dreamhack 1999. It goes on the way of their previous works like Catch22 and Clinique. They went even further in minimalism this time. The music is a fine chiptune. It has a gloomy feeling, which dominates the intro, too. There is a white background throughout the whole intro. Apart from black and white, there is basically only one color at a time - a shade of either red or blue. There are many parts after each other. By using colors this way, the parts fit together well. We can see spheres (drawn in one single color, but with correct contours according to 3d intersections); a mosaic effect, a julia morpher, 2d splines and 2d blobs. All of them look very simple, but very fine indeed. Because of the style of the intro, this mere list of the effects does not really tell much about the intro itself. There are some scrolling messages. By using only the minimal amount of effects, the focus was set on these messages. Unfortunately, there is no connection (or at least I was unable to find any) between, for example, 'we eat, sleep and disco' and 'never listen to the blind man's heart'... I feel that the concept is broken this way... The music fits the video, and the effects are timed to it. The code is nothing special technically, but there are no bugs or jerking pixels. There are two versions, (320x240 and 640x480); there are some minor differences between them, but I think that this can be put down to the laziness of the coder :) The low resolution version looks ugly because the effects are drawn without filtering. This type of demos and intros can not be judged objectively. I personally like this intro, but, in my opinion, one has to be in the right mood to enjoy it. gekko =====! music !================================================================= Around chaos Heatseeker www.traxinspace.com 1997 Heatseeker has been announced artist of the month, so I decided to review a bit older track by him. It is one of those resonating and synth full goa/trance or whatever tracks which I use to blow my mind than I'm too tired and need to clean my mind. This one runs for 11 mins and thanks to high amount of instruments it doesn't become too boring. Compared to other tracks in this style is this one top production. That was shitty review! :) childhood friend tiger milk.sgic.fi -> #48 Tiger is master of ambient music and this track presents it perfectly. Ethnical influences are mixed into modern music and form a perfect composition. It could be better, but it is best ambient track I've heard during last month. So listen to guitars, voices and other sounds and float away. la noche verde ressu milk.sgic.fi -> #68 One of the best songs ever released under "milk" label. It has signs of modern repetitive and minimalistic music mixed with music ambient. In it is played normal song in french style and changes impression of it significantly. This is how should look experimental track - it is still very enjoyable track and it is also new. It impressed me. Lull Serkul www.mono211.com -> Monotonik -> #30 A very interesting techno track. You can hear in it influence from Underworld and Necros and all this is put in a brand new habit. Even when it is defined as a techno, don't expect that stupid german kind of drumline, this one is much better. If you have nothing to do, check this one out. tryhuk =====! question !============================================================== > question of the week: > why doesnt everyone help you when you need help the most?
