I have been mostly eating... aspirins =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Tue Apr 20 00:04:53 1999 *** tmk has joined #demojournal <|ps|> who are you? :) uh, dunno. u should know since u want to interview me. <|ps|> you are tom moyatoshi smtg but please help me!!! ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ppppppppplllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaassssssssssseeeeeeeeeee help me oh alright then. my name in the brave real world is tom motoyoshi kalland. 1977 edition, makes me about 21 years right now. nothing much to say otherwise, except that im a student (or so they tell me) do some work (yeah rite... hahaha), etc. <|ps|> what do you study and where do you work? on the scene im "known" (among those i know at least) as tmk. i tend to do graphics and such on the scene as well as whining on irc where i go under the names tmk, toshi, gohan, etc. alot of crap. stop whining, im trying to chat with other ppl as well as coding here! :) <|ps|> okokokok but answer the question! :) im studying japanese and computer science at the university of oslo. its my third year now.. not that i really feel i get anywhere. i work as a programmer beside my studies. its even more boring. :) where i work? in norway. <|ps|> whats all this with the asian stuff? why do you have a jap name and all that? its all a big mystery and all, but ive heard rumours that my name might have something to do with the fact that im half japanese having a japanese mother and stuff. i guess this doesnt explain why im drawing asian stuff all the time tho, but im not sure its relevant for the question as ure being difficult ;) <|ps|> oh yes! it all comes back to me :P why do you draw only japanese cuties? :) amazing isnt it? :) actually, i did draw western cuties back in the good ol' days, but as noone noticed me i figured that i had to draw something different. as im not the most inovative person on face of this earth i didnt go for any fancy style, i just switched from drawing western gals to asian gals. since things went better then, i decided to stick to it. despite what the sprite advertisement says about "image is nothing", it seems like image is everything on the demo scene. i might draw some korean cuties, not just japanese cuties, but u would never know would u? :P <|ps|> hehe, is there a diference? well, japanese cuties tend to live in japan, while korean cuties tend to live in korea. its quite fundamental as if u go to korea to meet japanese cuties u wont get anywhere. <|ps|> i mean visually! :P well, u cant see all the way from korea to japan nor the other way around. <|ps|> er... u can? anyways, i like to think of the stuff i draw as japanese as it seems.. dunno. more natural. i guess im getting old and starting to get into this "i have to find my roots before i die"-phenomena. besides, i prefer girls that can make me some decent sushi. :) sushi is neat. u may argue that for instans yaku niku might originally be from korea, but i bet the japanese yaku niku tastes better anyway. and while we're talking about food, i could of course draw chinese chicks, but thats not really the same. i cant stand chinese food for more than a week before i flip out. <|ps|> what does yaku niku mean? yakuniku is a japanese meal where u fry some beef on a special frypan thingy on the table while u eat. niku means meat, so i guess u can guess what yaku means. <|ps|> hehe so when did you found out about the demoscene? hm... i was quite late actually. i stumbled across some demos back in 94 together with some friends. we figured demos were nice, but didnt really know anything about it. then we attended tg94 and formed INF. we were without doubt the lamest group around, but we had fun. i only did code back then tho, it was in 95 or so i had to do some graphics as noone else did it and then it developed from there. <|ps|> so that was your first party? how was it like? my first party was tg94. how it was? erh.. im not really sure, but i remember it as great. i didnt have anything to compare it with and i made alot of new friends there so it was nice. of course, if i think about the level of the compos etc. later i guess it wasnt anything special tho. :) <|ps|> and what was your latest party then? my latest so far is tg99. <|ps|> how was it comparing to tg94? compared to 94? hehe... well, since 94 party networks have become common u know ;) the network actually worked this year. except from that i dont have much nice things to say about it. the party really sucked from a sceners point of view. the main issue was to get the party as big as possible. it was big alright, but it was also very very boring. great place to be if halflife and leeching porn is ur hobbies, otherwise.. nah. <|ps|> you got 1st place at demo and gfx compo. care to share your secrets? :) yeah, be cynical and vote on urself. erh.. im not really sure. voters are strange ppl. <|ps|> hehe :) so THIS is the result of 5 years of scenering! how do you feel? :P did you do any big mistakes on the evolution process? not sure. hehe.. wasted time perhaps. mistakes.. hm. i should have done less graphics and tried to do some scene related coding. i didnt do that. that was stupid. i guess i could have moved to photoshop earlier as well as i feel im abit behind when it comes to 24bit. bla bla... i should have focused less on the scene more on school.. bla bla bla... whatever. :P <|ps|> what do you mean you are behind? yours pics rule!!!!!!!!! hehe.. thx. i mean that if i had started using 24bit earlier i would have more control in photoshop than now. but that will come eventually anyways, and if i had done that i would be worse in 8bit than im not. im just trying to come up with something ive done wrong to make ur interview interesting, but as im such a clever guy i cant really come up with any good ones. :) <|ps|> hehe! there we go! :) so whats up on norway? hows the scene going? the scene isnt going anywhere. its quite dead. its too few ppl actually doing anything, most of them just pretend they are very elite and thats about it. its like, if uve seen a demo u call urself a scener. otherwise norway is.. hm.. the food here is awfull. this is THE bread and potato country. cute gals and things like that around tho. the snow is melting now, nice. <|ps|> well, ive been told norway is very beautifull too many times care to reply? * tmk looks at his writing and starts to wonder about the 'toefl'-test he is supposed to have on thursday :/ care to reply on what? if norway is beautifull or not? guess its kinda nice if u like snow, mountains, and fjords. <|ps|> hehehe are you that bored of them? :) r u running out of clever questions? ;) ive never been too found of snow. if i leave i would probably miss it, but right now i like to be somewhere else. :) <|ps|> ok, let me give you some work then, how do you say "Fucking rules" on norwegian? just when i thought norwegian potatos were the most boring thing around u showed up. ;) <|ps|> whats wrong with norwegian potatos? i guess u cant really translate that sentence to propper norwegain without making a totally different sentence. :) <|ps|> then make a totally diferent sentence. its the meaning that counts! :D its not the potatos that is the problem, its the fact that ppl here eat them every day. its totally insane. <|ps|> bahaha no rice on norway? or your too used of eating it everyday like on japan? u can get rice here, im just talking about what the average person here eats. rice is nice. :) <|ps|> so you prefer rice over potatos then? is that what you are trying to say? something like that. im not really trying to say anything, im just trying to keep up writing nothing just like u. :) <|ps|> but this is important. i want to know what do i need to eat to be able to draw realistic cute girls on my computer!!! oh cammon... please tell me... first u grab hold of the first and cutest girl u can find and make her make u some decent food that doesnt contain potatos. sushi for instance. skip the bread and eat noodles. i was supposed to do a research on graphicians eating habits but i never finished that. danny for instans drinks tea all the time, that might help too. * |ps| writes down... tea=good <|ps|> thank you! :) so why do you draw girls all the time? are you some sort of demented pervert who cant get none? yeah, im hanibal lector jr... :) seriously tho, im doing fine. its just that when ure going to draw something ure supposed to stair at the stupid drawing for hours. its not very inspiring stairing at a fat aged man for instans. beside, if u spend so much time on a drawing, u want it to look nice when its completed, and girls tend to look nicer than most (all?) things. :) <|ps|> uuuuuuuhhhhhhh arent philosofical today? :) i guess you use that sentence alot to pick up girls no? :P no, usually just "hi, im tom" does the trick. :) <|ps|> i should use that! thx for the tip! "hi, im tom" sounds cool! :) although i would be lying! :P does that matter? no idea. girls like to say they want u to be honest and stuff. <|ps|> humm... * |ps| notes down: be honest! <|ps|> hei! thx!! your beeing quiet usefull!!! :) write down this to "look like tom" and "be like tom" etc. <|ps|> so whats planned for the future on the demoscene? you already won 2 gfx compos! what now? some more? ive won 2? i thought i had won 8 or so. oh well. i havent planned much, i think ill quit it in the near future. im going to tokyo to study from august, and there isnt really any demo scene in japan which makes it less interesting to keep on being active. ive told ppl that im going to quit many times before tho, lets see if i can manage this time. :) [editor: by 2 i meant the last 2 he participated tp8 and tg99 but...] <|ps|> i read it somewhere (csipd i think) that the ppl who are thinking of leaving the scene normally say the scene is dying as an excuse isnt that natural? it sounds very cool to say such, much better than "i feel too lazy and i simple cant keep up with the rest anymore" etc. <|ps|> yeah, sounds like that to me. i didnt knew you were leaving for japan! do you plan to come back? yeah, im planning to come back. im just trying to find a really good excuse to quit the scene. <|ps|> no, i mean to japan! not the scene okah, lets do this again: yes, i plan to come back from japan again. im just trying to find a good excuse for quitting the scene. [editor: i was a little slow... :P] <|ps|> aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh when will you come back? 1 year? 2? [editor: im speeding up now! :P] ive only planned 1 year so far. then we'll see. is it just me, or is this truly boring? <|ps|> no its not. now you shocked me! i didnt knew you were going to japan! got this feeling that beside u noone would find this amusing. i didnt mean that, i ment the whole conversation. :) perhaps ill start drawing blonde scandinavian chicks when i get there. <|ps|> i know i know... who gives a shit about what ppl think of the interview! hehe :) ok, so lets get technical so ppl really find this boring! uh-huh technical? what topic? <|ps|> whats the really big diference between 8bit and 24bit pics? i mean drawing them.. pal bla bla bla etc <|ps|> oh cammon... if you want to do an 8bit do you do the same thing as in 24bit except for the fact that in one you use paintbrushes and on the other you go fix the pixels one at a time? ure clever. thats the difference. and i dont have to fight a never ending battle with the pallette when i do 24bit. <|ps|> bahaha, does that mean 8bit suck? :) no way. i prefere 8bit. its more charm to it. <|ps|> more charm? [ed: slow again..] yeah. <|ps|> interesting choice of words. care to unravel the secret meaning? try drawing a 24bit and an 8bit and ull get my point. <|ps|> its more rewarding to see the final result? * tmk lacks vocabulary <|ps|> lacking is not good! :) its more human kinda. not sure how to explain this. i know <|ps|> sounds more like you made it and not some resource? :) whatever u say. i wont agree, but im too tired to argue about this. [ed: you seem tired! lacking words to describe the diference between doing an 8bit and a 24bit!] <|ps|> what have you been doing to feel so tired? yeah, lets have a 24h with tmk thing! :P its 2:50am mister. <|ps|> so what? cant, i got studies u know. <|ps|> i mean, tell us about your last 24h! :) woke up at some chicks place - ate breakfast - went to school - had lectures - finished an assignment - ate lunch with someone - went home - ate dinner - coded abit - watched some tv - irc. <|ps|> sounds like fun to me [ed: waking up at your mothers house doesnt count!!!] why dont u include ur autoexec.bat or something in demojournal isntead? this will bore ppl. <|ps|> my autoexec.bat is confidential. shut up and tell us what are your favorite coder/gfx/musician so we can end the interview today its confidential too. its not really something im able to evaluate. <|ps|> just shoot some names that pop on your head names other than names of cute jpop stars dont tend to pop on my head. <|ps|> your really tired man! :) drop some urls and/or emails and go to bed. this interview is over! :) emails and stuff.. sure.. amusing ppl can contact me at tmk@earthling.net nite <|ps|> bye and thx tomka! you rule! :) np, as for the rule part, im too tired to disagree. ;) <|ps|> bahahah [editor: damn he was tired!] Session Close: Tue Apr 20 01:57:44 1999 =====! demo !================================================================== Fabula by Function (party-version) Found at ftp://demo.cat.hu ???th place at Elevator'99 System requirements: 2.5 MB HD, a Midas-compatible soundcard, a VGA-card that supports mode 13H (320*200*256, this might be a problem :)) No memory-requirements listed, but I doubt it's above 16MB. The Demo: This is the second demo from Function, and it has a kind of oldskool feeling. It starts with a logo with TV-static, then the credits are shown with photo's, really cool: we see the members walking towards the camera at night in a dark street. Now lots of full-screen 2D-effects are shown, nothing very new or original, but at an OK speed. They made very good use of the palette, fast changes, I first thought I was looking at an Vesa2 demo. The bad side of this is they use far too much white flashes, and every transition to a new effect is either a fade to black or a flash. I know this is easy in mode 13H, but try to be more original! Almost no 3D, only a wire-framed star (with hidden surface removal) at the end. There are few pictures, some logos, some faces, with the standard nice girl. I've seen worse, but I've also seen better ones. The pictures are the only way to see its a low-color mode, as some of them are dithered. The music: There's only one tune, it starts with a soft guitar, then changes into some kind of rock-tune which sounds a lot like Nirvana, especially during the title screen. It doesn't change very much, only a slower part during the pictures, but I like it anyways. It's a nice change from the usual techno/ambient most of the demos use nowadays. Worth the download? Function are rather new, and we can see that: no revolutionary effects, no own library system (all graphics are in a subdirectory in PCX-format, yuck!), no complex 3D,... But they have some original ideas, and looking at the credit-photos, most members are fairly young, so they have lots of time to improve. Download this if you like to check out new groups, or if you like Nirvana-style music. After all, it's only 1.4 MB zipped. Seven =====! intro !================================================================= Purple - Public Demand 1st at The Gathering '99 Last year they couldn't reach the 1st place at the podium, but now! The intro is really nice, shows some effects in a new sight, like metaballing with toruses and not spheres, with the usual halftone as background. Funny is the particling part what is inspirated by a WinAmp plugin called Geiss. (http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/~geiss/geiss.html) The power-field (or what is it's name) effect what i have seen in Jizz first time is here used as layer, and the background is rotating and blured, Awesome! Some greetings is comming between two big spheres, with flares. So all what i can say it is worth to download, but the truth is that Photon impressed me last year much more... dlee =====! music !================================================================= "Chernobyl flowers" by Rez/TPOLM It's another chip tune from the master rez. Shodan wake up at the sound of that on Arf!party. It's the same as with music charts, some tunes that are placed high suck because of people different thoughts (as Dr. Bombay and so on..). Same with scene charts. If a demo is placed high on a chart doesnt mean it's good, just that it is popular. errrhm. well. anyway. keep on boozing. gfy/replay - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As I wrote in an article in Hugi #14, I consider charts an important element of the demo scene. Charts say who and what productions are hot, who is known and who is not, what newcomer has lately become famous, what group is most active, etc. They are an important indicator of new talents and new productions that are worth checking out. It is really a pity that there is no charts of significance on PC at the moment. OK, there are, for instance, the mags "Measure" and "Heroin", both with more than hundred voters. But more than 90% of the Measure voters come from Poland, so it's no international charts. And the charts in Heroin #1 were already a tad, namely more than half a year, old when the mag was released. Actually The E-Mag Network wanted to create a new chartsmag together, called "The Charts". This name should be taken literally. Several diskmags around the globe, Hugi included, were supposed to collaborate on spreading votesheets. The Charts would then be released as frequently as possible, after getting at least 200 fresh votesheets. However, this project has temporarily been put on ice due to the fact that the coder is busy with university. As a consequence, Hugi currently plans to install charts again. The next issue, #15, which is scheduled for May 1999, is supposed to contain a handy votesheet. The results will be published in Hugi #16, whenever that number is going to be released. Currently we plan to host world charts, including the same sections as in the Hugi #12 charts (demos, intros, groups, diskmags) plus coders, graphicians and musicians. Instead of Hugi #12 for which you could only vote for three items per section, you will be able to list up to five items in each section. This will ensure a greater variety of names appearing in the charts. Actually we had planned more sections in The Charts than we will now have in the Hugi charts, but let's keep it this way first. Future will show how our readers will accept it. Moreover, we might consider installing local charts as known from "Fleur", where each voter can vote for people/productions from his own country. But this feature isn't sure yet, as it would require a vast number of voters in each country to lead to representative results. I hope that installing charts in Hugi will stimulate competition and help new talents to get known faster. Any comments or suggestions? Contact me at hugi@netway.at.
