I have been mostly eating... aspirins =====! interview !============================================================= Session Start: Sat Apr 10 01:31:39 1999 *** [Picard] has joined #demojournal <[Picard]> hi ps <|ps|> who are you? <[Picard]> guess what. i'am picard a coder from Hungary <|ps|> ah, your that guy who wins size compos. how old are you? <[Picard]> that's right :) 22 <|ps|> why are you in the scene? <[Picard]> good question. <|ps|> want to give it a try? money, fame, job, friends... <[Picard]> i was amazed by the intros & demos. specialy from the code size of the view. currently design is the important word <|ps|> i guess thats bad for you then <[Picard]> and with the fast computers almost all code can be done, it's only a matter of coding time (all code: i mean code from currently demos) <|ps|> so why dont you have a megademo out? <[Picard]> because i'am very lazy :) and i'am not good in team work <|ps|> whats the problem with team work? you work and the team watches... i do it all the time... <[Picard]> if you want a megademo you definitly need a good team <|ps|> you do not! you need to get a good music and keep asking for help on gfx and 3d modelling/textures <[Picard]> i don't have much experince in team coding. i made more 3d engines by myself, but didn't make any real more coder demo yet <|ps|> cant you model and do some crappy textures like the rest? <[Picard]> i tried it myself, but it was too much for me, i couldn't finish <|ps|> persistance is the key <[Picard]> no. i don't want a demo with crappy textures and models <|ps|> why not? ppl win party compos with those all the time!! <[Picard]> i don't care. i want to make demos that people watch at home more times and enjoying it (ofcoz my job is the good code, and want to impress people by the code) <|ps|> what if you dont get it done? wouldnt it be better to atleast do a crappy one? <[Picard]> well. i don't know. till now i failed to make a good demo, so i must change something. maybe you are right, and i should start with crappy ones, and make a good one latter with more experince <|ps|> lets change subject. do you give a f#%k about the capital of madagascar? <[Picard]> sure. it's demojournal :) <|ps|> what about the war in kosovo? <[Picard]> well. Hungary joined NATO just before this war began. i don't like wars <|ps|> why not? <[Picard]> they don't have much sence, except to waste big money in the military industry <|ps|> thast the point... you send some troups, spend some cash so you develop your economy and get respect of the little countries, havent you found out that yet? <[Picard]> you are right <|ps|> ofcourse im right im always fucking right, thats my fucking problem i dont know when to shutup! <[Picard]> depressed? <|ps|> very! how did you guess? <[Picard]> question of the last week <|ps|> what was last weeks question? no peaking!!! <[Picard]> "Why does this mag suck so much?" (maybe it was an earlier) <|ps|> no no, that was a question by carebear not mine he just insisted so much for me to put it on the demojournal, i couldnt refuse last week was about mekka vs gathering oh yeah, seen any stuff from those yet? <[Picard]> yes <|ps|> liked anything? <[Picard]> i liked them, but no outstanding one <|ps|> care to comment on any special production? <[Picard]> i liked wild anim legoland (and i like the babylon5 music in it :) somebody wrote on csipd that it's simple to make an anim like this but i don't think so <|ps|> oh yeah, you are very big fan of babylon5 arent you? <[Picard]> YES i watch too much tv :) btw i just can't wait to see Matrix (the movie). did you hear about it? <|ps|> no i didnt, tell me about it <[Picard]> "i can't tell you what is the matrix you must see it your self" :) http://www.whatisthematrix.com/ <|ps|> :P i wrote an article for hugi about matrices i know what a matrix is! :P <[Picard]> why don't you make a 3d engine then? <|ps|> because i hate coding. i got tired of ppl telling me my coding is slow and that i should learn asm and that i should change to c and that the future is windows and all that shit <[Picard]> listen to your heart and code for pleasure <|ps|> my heart hasnt been very favorable lately and im sick of coding i always end up with slow oldskool rotines <[Picard]> it's very hard to keep pace in coding, a musician or a gfx man has much easier job (i think) <|ps|> can you track? <[Picard]> nope :) <|ps|> why not? dont like music? what about pixel? <[Picard]> i like music, i'am just not a musician type guy [editor: the next 3 lines have been changed to protect the responsible from retaliations] *** XXXX has joined #demojournal boooo ;)) *** XXXX has left #demojournal <[Picard]> i was good in painting in school, but i didn't tried it on computers, and i stick with coding & forget the gfx stuff <|ps|> but gfx is important on design <[Picard]> as i told you, i'am not good in design, and i mostly see demos with a coder eye <|ps|> so start looking with both eyes! <[Picard]> every people have a different view about demoscene. i am impresed mostly by technical things <|ps|> like what? <[Picard]> like fulcrum's 3d <|ps|> what about it? <[Picard]> it's technical impressed me it's not so important. currently on the hungarian scene mailing list there is a big thread about what is important in demo for different people <|ps|> and what is your conclusion? <[Picard]> there are very different expectations. a good demo should have balanced technical and design features there are many people (most of them none coders) who don't care about the code, and how difficult to code some effect, they are interesed only in the result that's not a problem, i can understand them <|ps|> lets talk about hungary why isnt hungary known outside hungary? <[Picard]> about hungary? i don't know. <|ps|> you dont know? you hungarian, you should know.. <[Picard]> there are people tring to popularize hungary abroad <|ps|> and what do you think about it? <[Picard]> maybe we should release more produtcions on famous parties <|ps|> humm do you have a girlfriend? <[Picard]> currently no :) <|ps|> what happened? <[Picard]> nothing special :) have you a gf? <|ps|> no i dont, never had and the future doesnt look very bright.. <[Picard]> maybe a gf would help you out this depressed state they used to make men happy (in the beginning :) [editor: this all seems vaguely familiar... like if i had heard it before...] <|ps|> and then there was dogs (which i dont own any) and then horses (which i also dont have any) and then cats and birds and gameboys. my problem is that i dont have any of those either. i only have a damn demojournal to release every week here is an idea! lets finish the interview.. what are your favorite coders, musicians and gfxians then? <[Picard]> no special favorite i'am always confused about this part of the chart sheets. it's very hard to select 1-2 best of <|ps|> so say several... it doesnt matter <[Picard]> coder: nix rod statix gfx: ra visualize made music: hunz dune muffler <|ps|> and what about demo and intro? <[Picard]> fulcrum , stash <|ps|> well, i think this is it, im kind of getting tired of beeing depressed aswell. care to leave mail of html or smtg? <[Picard]> you mean like: picard@telnet.hu no homepage or what so ever [editor: that was exactly what i meant] <|ps|> well ok! want to ask anything to yourself? <[Picard]> nope <|ps|> well then its over! thx for your time! <[Picard]> thanks see ya Session Close: Sat Apr 10 03:10:45 1999 =====! demo !================================================================== Yume 2000 (Future World Mix) by INF (party-version) Found at www.scene.org 1st place at the Gathering'99 System requirements: Pentium, but PII recommended (MMX optimized). 32MB ram, 5.5 MB HD, Vesa2 320*240*32/24/... SB16/GUS or compatible. DOS-version: crashes at the end when the music ends. Win-version: "Unable to init Direct Draw"-> might be a problem with my drivers. [editor: my DOS version crashes after 10 seconds (maybe because of music and the windows version is shown on 1/4 screen] The Demo: When I first saw the results of the Gathering'99, I was a bit surprised: Yume 2000 by INF? Did they just re-release Yume 2, a bit changed? Luckily, this isn't the case. It's rather a sequel then a remix. There are some parts that have the same "topic", but they didn't cut&paste any code, music or graphics. Regarding the code, they certainly improved a lot. Remember the mpeg of the dancing girl in the background? Now they made a 3D-model of her, claiming to have the first "true" virtual idol in a demo. Well, lets face it: it will take much more than today's CPU's to make something that looks like a real human. Especially the fact they used only one texture for the face makes it much less real. When I see someone dancing & singing in front of a microphone, I would like to see at least the mouth moving. But the whole scene has shadows from multiple colored lightsources, which isn't easy to code! The girl even cast shadows on herself, unlike the dancing robot/alien in Event Horizon/Smash Design (1st at MS'99). Some other things that re-appear: metaballs with morphing textures [editor: one more ball added and its faster now!], a deformed Escher-knot, a city-part [editor: with a very slow 3d engine], and a chain of lightsources with fast-changing, beautiful backgrounds. TMK made even more good-looking-Asian-girl-pictures, with a soft blurred look. 3D-addict made some raytraced piccies, and I think it's a pity they aren't shown in hi-res. 320*240 just isn't enough to see the details... The Music: ... is an MP3, just as in Yume2. However, the .nfo says they have permission to use it (Future world, from Elt/Avex Trax). I think it's a good thing to mention this, because merely giving the credits does not mean you have the right to use it (Yes, informatics in Belgium includes a course intellectual property :)), so people might think you ripped it. Anyway, it's a kind of Japanese pop-song, with vocals of course. I like it, but I noticed the big difference between tracked music <-> MP3: MP3 is refrain-strophe-refrain-strophe-..., while tracked music has more freedom, movements, themes, transitions... I hope the usage of MP3's doesn't kill this variation. There is almost no synchronization (the vocals start before the singer reaches the microphone), but the speed is right OK for the demo. Worth the download? As I said before, it's more a sequel then a remix, and they improved a lot. My favorite part is the light-chain with lots of different backgrounds, really nice... There are almost no bugs/ugly parts/... except the crashing at the end, but we all know the stability of party-releases :). If you didn't like Yume 2, you better leave this alone, all others should give it a try. Seven Psychic Symphony writes: I must say i still enjoy more yume2 than 2000, it has more feeling to it. This one although the first 3 minutes are awesome, it's quite clear INF runs out of ideas and simply repeats the 3d girl and prolongs some effects without any design unlike in the beggining of the demo where all the effects are suiting the music and arent boring at all. They are even quite damn awesome! The only other thing i want to mention is, besides the bugs which should be fixed on the final, the ed-engine is still slow, the town scene which is an awesome idea coming from the skyscrapers with only windows to the ground full of publicity and media is totally ignored and you only notice how low the fps is at the time. Some optimization please!!! Either way, TMK pics tule. Krav's coding rule. Orome's 3d rules and 3daddict's raytraces kick rear-end! Hope to see more from INF in the near future. ps =====! intro !================================================================= [editor: this is a demo although its not very big so i put it on the intro corner..] name : not foolish 2 by : green grapes released : Spring Break'99 demo compo 3rd place get it : ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/1999/springbreak99/demo/nf2.zip yo, bam at da keyz. i just downloaded this little (yes) demo because it showed up as the highest placed dos demo at SB99. This might not be a top-quality 3d demo like we are all used to these days. But if you are missing the funkiness of the old days of da scene you might consider this demo worth leeching. so warm up your ftp client, sit back and read this review... The coolest thing of this demo is the music, minimalistic, oldskool, relaxed, reminds me of the musicdisk "Nothing on" by Rennaisance... obviously those N.A. people got the right taste of good music. The demo starts with a green grape jumping over a white screen followed by a simply textmode intro (run the demo from plain dos or you might experience some not-so-good effects that might spoil the whole atmosphere of the demo!!;). then some blur zoomers with particles are coming up. the code is really nothing special. if a rotozoomer with three transparent layers can impress you then you are not from this planet. the end of the demo features a nice surprise that I won't reveal here... (...hint: if you have ever played "The Castles of Dr.Creep" on C64, nethack might be nothing for you...;) If you like music, if you hate 3d worlds and if you have 558kb to spare on your hd, get this demo now. you may find this demo way too big if you really give a fuck about the size... you can mail me if you have something really unimportant to say: my mail is believe@gmx.net. it's safe against mailbombs so don't bother... bam [editor: he is lying.. i mailbomb him all the time! try it!] =====! music !================================================================= "TDRmix" by TowerX/Astral tdr.scene.org (release #96) This song is mighty big on size and surprisingly not on time.. It's basically a mix of 9 songs previously released on TokyoDawn Records: "Dusk City" by paniq, "The lost shadow" by mentz, "connection busy" by mefis, "Green photekkecamera(rmx)" by crab, "Unleash" by Assign, "peachy" by Assign&Netpoet, "Into the unknown" by keith303, "Twisted" by Assign&Kom'ah and "Cones&Towers(rmx)" by Zake. It winds up on 6 minutes of breakbeats with several breakdowns with the most catchy parts of each tune. Unlike with some mixes this one doesnt suffer from the original-was-better syndrome. The only part that is not so good is the "twisted" song fitin, the vocals sound too much out of order unlike on the original. All the other songs fit together perfectly creating a whole new mood. Great effort from towerx, we wait for tdrmix2. Maybe on release #100? :) ps =====! quote !================================================================= boooo ;)) [editor: if anyone can guess who the trouble-maker is he/she wins the right to see his/her name on next demojournal.] =====! question !============================================================== >ms or tg? why? I was very curious to see the MS releases because many contacts of mine told me they would compete there. Some 4k intros are really awesome, and I also like the 32k game compo, a speciality of the Mekka parties. However, I cannot state whether TG or MS has brought the more stunning releases now as I haven't checked out them all yet. (Adok/Hugi) melwyn replies: tg. we had so much fun. you forgot springbreak'99 and trip99. springbreak was held at the same weekend as tg99+ms99. distance I live for lettuce and other green stuff. Los/Recreation [editor: ok, i got the picture! no more carrots on your soup] "fICKEN!!! wer zur tg fährt hat angst vor steelers dicken eiern!" [English: "ms!!! people going to tg have no balls!"] bam Last year Mekka releases were better i think (Fulcrum, Boutique, Licht) now only G-Cube was dope i think. Gather's history is much better; - 92 Wayfarer/Spaceballs - 93 Desert Dreams/Kefrens - 94 nothing_funny_2_remember - 95 Dope/Complex - 96 Inside/Cncd vs. Ninja2/Melon - 97 Sex/Cncd|Orange vs. Robotnik/Rage vs. Astral Blur/TBL - 98 was_not_the_best - and now again some interresting stuffz: Yume2ooo/Inf (remix, but a good one), III-Live Tomorrow/TLS (i like spirals!) Okiedokie/Soopa Doopa (hmmm... Fake-Fudge? Or Purple? :}) Inthemix/Replay (Nice as always.) And this year TG Organizers gave the prise money for the winners. =) Lee Dooper . Exceed .
