I have been mostly eating... croissants =====! interview !============================================================= *** willbe has joined #demojournal <|ps|> hello! who are you? :) hello i'm the pope, my job is cool pretty paid, lotta power you know unfortunately i'm only a little musician, sometimes graphician too i like to design web sites too <|ps|> where are you from? france, a little town near switzerland it's cold but quiet <|ps|> and whats your super alter ego real life persona? aah this one. he's 23 years, works in a music school and is a fuckin good drummer :) <|ps|> drummer? you have a band? not for the moment, i spend many many time on my personnal music on the internet <|ps|> oh yeah, tell us how you started with that... but i used to belong to 3-4 bands at the same time 3 years ago. well, i first used module format cuz using samples is sooo cool and cheap when you own a computer and then i figured out that making hiphop and mixing it in realtime (possible under IT) was very very interesting <|ps|> when was that? it was 3 years ago. i used module before, like everybody to test musical abilities of the computer and producing ugly dance ripped tunes (fortunately, all of them are deleted ;) well, last year i got my 1st modem <|ps|> hehe go on.. i decided to produce serious stuff to put on the net it's very interesting when you are a simple drummer to manage a real solo carrier on an alternate world (the net) you catch listeners and other musicians feedbacks wherever they are that's pretty cool and new <|ps|> you play other instruments aswell? or just drums? i play bass too keyboards but you know, no practice, no interest i prefer inviting real musicians to record them instead of playing all myself with a crappy method my job is composer, not minion <|ps|> you also pixel... how did you enter the computer world at all? oh, this is a very simple story when you like (love?) computers, the magic they produce since you're a little boy you catch a computer, spend time on it, produce anything and i made graphical studies at school so this explain that too ;) <|ps|> hehe what was your first computer? pc 486 but i had it very very early <|ps|> straight into it? i was reading computer news even without owning any i was fan of amiga, regarding to graphical capabilities but no $$ to buy one i had to wait that momma bought me a comp. she got a pc ;) <|ps|> whee! :) so in what groups are you in? i'm iddeling in skytech i'm rocking the music scene with theralite allstarz and i'm working a little with a portugese guy that rocks! * |ps| looks around <|ps|> who? who could it be? can i consider myself as an evolve member? <|ps|> yes you can! :) so i'm working with a new group that is cool to work with ;) <|ps|> tell us about your scene success so far, what have you done in the past? not so many things <|ps|> go on.. i spended a lot of time to produce many tracks for my discography <|ps|> discography? the stuff on my site, if you want :) i've written two tunes for a french demo than came 2nd at ltp2 party sparks i ranked 1st at wired98 surprise music compo well, i'm not pretty old in the scene, but i find it very interesting to work with so many interesting guys <|ps|> oh yeah, you seem to have some troubles with your site lately, what happened? ah, about altern.org it has to shut down because of a scandalous affair <|ps|> what affair? shortly, a member of altern posted sum horny photos of a french actress <|ps|> :P jugment said that altern.org was responsible of his members actions this suxx so altern has to shut for a while and to pay a severe bill <|ps|> where is your page currently then? i located it at wanadoo, a french provider <|ps|> dump url! :) but no matter the server, i now use a free redirection service http://willbe.cjb.net the url wont change again never :) <|ps|> ah! ;) i heard some ppl say your site is quite stylish... how do you plea? i like to show i have good taste ;) <|ps|> hehe btw: how was volca? volcanic5 was full, full, FULL... of gamers 900 guys, that was crazy this was cool anyway even if organisation was quite slow and narrow-minded they surely were overtaken ;) there were pretty good productions <|ps|> name some we could see a new fashion : the back to atari/amiga roots the winning productions in demos / intros were both from orange juice crew. digital murder released a cool demo too. popsy team too. so many prods in fact <|ps|> you did anything for v5? a tune that ranked almost 10th <|ps|> how do you feel about that? i was not very present ;) <|ps|> pleased you mean! :P ;) composing for demoparty is very special <|ps|> why? you have to make something that everybody likes and that everybody can assimilate at the 1st listening that's particular, i'll try to work this a little ;) <|ps|> hehe! :) or, there's another method <|ps|> what? if you want to win a compo bring 50 friends with you ;) <|ps|> hehe what are your plans for the future now? i will continue tracking for demos/music discs else i will release mp3 for my personnal releases my only ambition is to produce the best music i can <|ps|> oh yeah, tell us about your latest musicdisk "time machine" ah yes, time machine ;) this is my 1st music disc. i wanted to enhance the triphop side of my work and to construct a real story on a real heavy philosophic concept. time is huge ;) and back to the future is a masterpiece for me <|ps|> go on.. this was a good way to release not 8 singles but a whole opus i dont think that listening one only track from the disc is enjoyable. the whole disc tells a story it's not very easy to explain, but so obvious when you press 'play' and listen to it ;) <|ps|> hehe i like the weird french translation of the vocals you used! :D ah excuse my poor english mister, i'm not advantaged by my language. france and england were fighting each other for centuries ;) <|ps|> no its not that, its how they can make the voice expressions like in the real movie. it cracks me up thinking about them beeing in the studio doing that so well ah yes ;) to say the truth, i prefer the french version than the original <|ps|> why? maybe cuz i heard the french version first, when i was a lil' boy. you know, nostalgy ;) the vocal actors brought so much talent in it. <|ps|> yes! :) and doc is much much mysterious when he says in french "erased from existence" "effac‚‚‚ de la r‚alit‚" ;) <|ps|> de la realiTEEEEEEEEEEEE :P hehe anyways, what about your real life! what do you do? i'm working in the administration of a music school <|ps|> humm what do you do there? paper <|ps|> paper? paper-work? photocopies printing <|ps|> humm... in a musical school? yes <|ps|> does it pay well? :P not really but it's a job so you can live and have a flat and the job talks about music <|ps|> and pay your inet phonebills? :P hmmmm not entirely ;) <|ps|> then how come you are on? :D ladies pay me ;) well, i have a good technique to pay less i make music simple isnt it ? :) <|ps|> hehe looks like it! :P tell us whats your favorite demo and why? i love stars/nooon cuz it's a pretty old demo (for me, 95 is old) it's french, and it's damn funky <|ps|> hehe what about music you listen to tracked stuff? sure, to stay tuned about what is done but in an artistic way, no for my pleasure, i prefer to listen to cds pink floyd, prince, tears for fears, genesis, wu-tang, nas, the roots, harry connick jr so many excellent artists we need to listen to real artists ;) <|ps|> yeps what parties you ever been to and what was your favorite? not much: ltp2 (france) wired98 (belgium) volcanic5 (france) my fav is the ltp2. my 1st, sure, but the most intimist and quiet and the most friendly. nice place too <|ps|> what can you recall from it? i remember when our demo was showing on the screen ;) heartbeat, loud ! <|ps|> :) i dont know whatelse to ask, any ideas? hehehe ;) isnt it long enough ? btw i gotta go <|ps|> ok lets end then, wanna say hi to anyone? sure i would want to greet all at theralite, tuner.com, mono211, bomb, orange juice, skytech, evolve, arf!studios and that's all ;) <|ps|> dump your email so ppl can get in touch! :) will.be@wanadoo.fr only for sweet things ;) hip hop rulez ! <|ps|> hehe ok thx for your time willbe! :) time is only a machine ;) =====! demo !================================================================== Robotnik by Rage Found at www.hornet.org 2nd place at the Gathering'97 System requirements: 486 with 8MB RAM, but Pentium STRONGLY recommended (those were the days :)). Any soundcard supported by Midas, and 3MB HD Vesa not mentioned anywhere, so I think they made very good use of the 256-color mode. Well, not much '99 demos out there, so let's take a look back at one of my favorite demos: Robotnik/Rage The demo: This was the first demo that I managed to run when I traded my old 486 for a PII (with win98), and it just blew me away. Although it's two years old, it is still more impressive than most of todays demos. How come? One word: atmosphere. From the very beginning, with a spotlight trying to find a spider, till the end, with the picture of a deformed face, there is a dark, aggressive feeling. There is no story or theme, it's just evoked by the 3d-scenes, the effects, the texts superimposed over the rest,... Now I'm not a black-metal addict or so, but this is so well done ... As I'm a coder, I usually pay a lot of attention to the effects, but now I had to watch this several times before I noticed that several effects are really powerfull and hard to do. For example, the voxel-mountains wrapped around a globe, the video projected on the skull with shadows, and especially the destroyed city, reflecting in the best river I've seen on a computer. Really, really good! Trying to find some bad points to make this review more objective :) ... Oh yes, there are almost no pictures, and the transitions are of mostly of the "screen scrolls down/rotates away/burst in pieces/... and the next screen comes up"-type. But please ignore this, I'm just nagging now. The music: There are two parts. At the beginning, during the credits, the music is very symphonic (almost psychic symphonic :)), [ed: HEI!] rather slow but loud with lots of basses, and soundeffects like the spider running, the skull being drilled, ... The main part start softly but threatening, then bursts into a metal/rock tune. When I showed Robotnik to a friend, he said "Hey, I recognize this tune! It's 'Punish your machine' from Front 242." The .nfo file doesn't mention this, but the text (Punish your machine) is shown several times during the demo, so I guess this is (partially?) a cover. But it's very suitable and a lot of effects are perfectly synchronized to changes of speed, basses etc. I think they build the demo around the music, instead of adding the music later. Worth the download? Yes. Definitely yes. Maybe you'll think its too dark, or the music isn't your style, but I would recommend everyone to watch this gem at least once. Seven =====! mod !=================================================================== "Onme (turnin' remix)"/Hunz+Wayfinder http://www.kosmic.org/members/wayfinder/ Original tune was part of a tribute to 80's music disk. It is a weird doskpop tune with some cool vocals. Wayfinder picked this one up, turned it upside down and gave the vocals a whole diferent use. I think i must tell the little story on how i came across this one. Me idling on #trax. Me asks for date of release of the new underworld album (beaucoup fish out on stores 5th march btw) and wayfinder sells his product by saying his tune has a very underworld feeling to it. And so it does... The next day i also got kittens.mp3 which is a new underworld track. I must say whenever i was playing it i was waiting for the lyrics of this tune to start beeing chanted. It's abit commercial but not that much, the samples could be better but are not crap either. The song develops so well it stings. Without noticing you start stomping your feet and shaking your head. When you notice it's already to late! ;) The song goes on and on, picking up the beat until it fully develops and just drifts away. If you listen to it you'll soon realize why it's called turnin remix... ;) ps =====! quote !================================================================= "Fnarfa!" Right now she is 24 years old and one of the world's top models. "Actually I wanted to study art", she says. "But when I won the Supermodel contest some years ago, I decided I had no other choice than to start a professional model career. Now I am mainly a model but use as much of my spare time as possible to study." We asked her where she got the energy to be a model and study at the same time. In a mysterious voice, she answered: "I got it from my leisure activities when I was still at highschool. This gave me the happiness and motivation I need for my career." Being asked for details, Sylvia says: "I spent as much time as possible going out with my friends. And whenever I was alone, I used to read my Hugi." --------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Rosenthal was born in New York City as the son of a Jewish father and a half-German, half-British mother. "Our success comes from an innovative software engineering tool called NeuroCode, whose development I have already started when I was at highschool. It makes programming much easier because of its artificial intelligence. You just have to implement the basic concepts, and then the program will do everything for you based on your dialogue with it. In other words, you talk to the intelligent program. And it anticipates your wishes." We asked him where he got the inspiration for this innovation.
