I would appreciate it even. I'm only putting the pieces together. It's our scene! let's make things happen... Assign's e-mail got caught in traffic once again but since Nephoo had sent a little wonderfull review of falcon's gravity98 tune... I didn't had much trouble! :) Other than that, Demojournal gets nostalgical all over again, this time because of the Hornet archive. Also a little trip into the 30 minutes gfx compo. :) And to wrap it up Assembly 1998 dejavu! Psychic Symphony -------------- ------| 2.Demonews |----------------------------------------------------------- -------------- Dave: News from Spain: 2 tunes composed by myself will be uploaded to my page in this week: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Foothills/8279 checkthisout! ... hehe, don't cry when hear... just remember that I am a CODER and not a musician. The chiptune sounds nice but it's a bit weird. (30 kb size only) Booplague joined to PhyMosys!!! Now PhyMosys is composed by the following people: - Navi Coder - Liyak Coder - Osucaru GFX - U-Raver Music - Dave Coder - Booplague Music I remember that we continue looking for new members in the group... ... in special musicians and gfx artists.. contact with me please: dave@bglinks.com That's all from Spain. CU! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Psychic Symphony: Sad enough, following demonews and traxweekly, the whole Hornet archive is going to disappear! Leaving behind a trail of demoscene memories, good and bad moments, either by the ratings, your first touch with a REAL archive, the infamous gigantic musical archive or plain and simply the crew behind it all. I am sure i speak for the whole demoscene when i say: We will miss www.hornet.org! :( Besides that, The convention 1998 demoparty is probably being held on norway this weekend. (www.convention.com) Hum... Watching one of those Mtv videos where they have some information on these little squares. In the latest video from Sash! it is written that Sascha (the skinny guy on the video) on his home likes listening to music from 'Miss Saigon'. Hum... Yep. My name is Claus-Dieter Volko, handle Adok, group Hugi. Phone number is 004316652249, as if anyone would ever call :), credit card access code is not available coz I have no credit card, shoe size is about 41 (size 8) as far as I know, and the hair style is not special, pretty short hair, dark fair. And although you didn't ask for it, I'll reveal to you that I was born on October 8th, 1983, in Vienna, Austria. > 2. what is it you do again? In real life I am a pupil. As regards the scene, I am the main editor of the Hugi diskmag and organize the Hugi Size Coding Competitions. > 3. that sounds important :P is it as hard as it sounds? Maybe. At least it takes pretty much time. For instance, I spent all my summer-holidays working on Hugi #12. > 4. is it worth all that trouble? Definitely. It's cool to see the result of your work afterwards, and it's nice to read the readers' opinions - both positive and negative ones - and what influence your mag has on the scene. :) > 5. how do you see the future of the diskmag scene and the demoscene in > general? The future of the diskmag scene is very positive. It is better now than half a year ago. We have a big magazine again (guess which :)), several other mags have been released or started, and newsletters like yours try to become established in the scene. Let's just advertise the magazines more and try to get the readers more active, and everything will be good again. Concerning the demoscene, many old sceners have less time now because of their studies or their professional career. But that's just the natural development. Anyhow fresh blood has to come into the scene. > 6. you think we are drifting away from the old days then? Maybe. In any case the scene has changed, as many articles in diskmags describe in details. But those changes are not necessarily bad, and in fact some changes brought the scene advantages. For instance, without the Internet the scene would certainly be _much_ smaller now. Whether it would be less active, is another question. However, the answer is probably yes, too. > 7. enough on serious stuff! think fast! > first demo I don't remember which was the first demo I saw. One of the first demos I still remember, however, is Crystal Dreams 2. > best demo I can't tell you which is the best demo but only give you my subjective point of view, i.e my favourite demo. And that always changes from time to time, so I won't tell you anything because it could be outdated within a week. > 3d 3d is okay. > oldskool Still cool. > newcomers Should be supported and guided into the scene. > elite As being active in the demo scene requires special talents, we all (or at least most of us) are in some way elite. If you can't think logically, you can't become a coder, for example. > aliens A standard question that has appeared in each demojournal interview so far... > 8. you want to shout out to anyone? family, friends... Greetings to all my contacts, the whole scene and all I know in real life. > 9. what about just advertise for something like hugi#12 :P Why not? :) If you haven't done it yet, get Hugi #12 at http://home.pages.de/~hugidownload/ and enjoy reading 1.8 mbyte of articles! > 10. well! thats it! time for the smoke! was it good for you as it was for > me? ;) I hope so. :) Now I have experienced myself that answering an interview form is harder than a live interview. :) PS- Hey man... I possed the questions thinking on what you would have answered! I did them on the spot! As soon as you agreed with the interview. REALLY! I enjoy more interviewing people over irc because of these problems exactly but life is unfair! It also depends a lot on the mood of both the interviewer and interviewee along with their kind of relation. If 2 persons know each other remotly even, it's a lot easier to interview and to be interviwed then if they are completly strangers to each other. There's an IMHO missing somewhere above so i'll just drop it on this last sentence! ;) ---------------------- ------| 6.Demo of the week |--------------------------------------------------- ---------------------- 'Hyperventilation' by Byterapers inc. Code: Mr.Sex and Gurdan Graphics: Mistral, Mike and Jate Music: Yolk & Legend / CNCD Second place at Remedy'98 demoparty! Very tight competition between this little beauty and first place 'Destination Goatland' which is a beautyfull windows demo! Actually there even was a little fuzz about it, now everything is ok so i'm not gonna bring it up! :) Anyways, more then 10 years old Byterapers kick major behind with this ABBA feeling demo counting as their 4th on PC. Sexadelic being released at assembly 1998... These guys are more then veterans! Back from the C64 days! Code is simply brilliant! Very good 3D with some flares, crossfadings and 2D effects. Awesome 3D transparent objects like metaballs! Graphics-wise it's brilliant! Loads of quality graphics everywhere. Attention to those ABBA gfx aswell! :) Sound by the gods of sound Yolk and Legend! What else could you ask for? Phat beats with sample from a very own ABBA tune which fits in BRILLIANTLY well on the whole demo! Design is definitly the finishing touch to this masterpiece. Music tweaks are fully syncronised and produce an awesome effect! Besides, the ABBA feeling to it is just overwhelming. First time i saw this one was like watching 'second reality' or '303' for the first time only better... You know that chill that creeps up your spine? Exactly when the vocals enter with those phat beats pounding! =) 'You just eat, sleep, go on stage and nothing more.' Psychic Symphony ----------------------- ------| 7.Intro of the week |-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- 'Mandala' by Mandula Code: Rod Music: VLAD Just quoting the infofile: 'Mandala took part in the Scenest'96 4k intro competition in Hungary. Big surprise, the code is optimized for size not for speed, and maybe the syncronising is inaccurate on faster machines due to this.' Very nice effects. Some rotozoomers, some fractals, some clouds. Anyways, i can't judge the music but i can judge the code and the code is brilliant! Rod is really a great guy and a very talented coder! Just go get this small intro from mandula's homepage (http://www.inf.bme.hu/~mandula) and enjoy a small hungarian trip! BTW- The intro got 5th place out of 11! Psychic Symphony --------------------- ------| 8.MOD of the week |---------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Dead Flower by Falcon/Pulse. I want to write a few words about the module that kicked my ass this week. It is 'Dead Flower' made by Falcon/Pulse for Gravity'98 music compo. I didn't had too much time to see stuff from Gravity'98. But on this week I was hearing the whole modules from this party. This one stayed in my memory to this time. Why? Design, design and once again design. When I was hearing it for the first time I didnt reasoned the title with the song, but after some times I divided this module into three parts. First: Birth of a new Flower. With easy guitars, beautyfull female chorus and so on. Atmosphere is growing up. In background you can hear voices of waking up day, birds and other animals. And we are jumping to second part: blossoming flower. This part has stronger guitars, more frequently choruses and louder voices of nature. This part is going to small episode I named "Full Bloom". After it our imagined flower is dying. Guitarts are worse, we can hear some minor falses and at the end sad silence. Very good module. You have to download it. For years, we have struggled to provide the best user interface and highest level of organization possible. With over 300 gigs of files downloaded per month, all of us have been kept very busy. Our archive is undeniably the single most active demo scene location in existence. On 04 Feb 1998, the final issue of DemoNews was released. From that point forward, the energy of those who maintained the archive decreased steadily. Finally it seemed obvious that we were no longer willing to give _enough_ energy. Many aspects of the archive have been completely automated (/incoming/music being one example). If it hadn't been for this, the archive would not have lasted this long. Hornet is disbanding. Although not all of our group members directly assisted with the maintenance of the archive, they were all driving forces keeping our organization together. Our group, in its final state, consisted of 5 members: Andy Voss (Phoenix), Brett Neely (GD), Pim van Mun (Stony), Jim Leonard (Trixter), and myself (Snowman). Andy (maintainer of everything that was "demo" on the archive) plans to retire from the scene by the end of this year, but not without one final scene project, a CDROM filled with memorabilia from NAID '95 and '96. You can contact him at vossa@rpi.edu or xproject@erols.com Brett (columnist for DemoNews and co-organizer for Music Contest) has retired from Hornet but plans to remain in the music scene; you can reach him now at gd@scene.org Jim (coder for our single large-scale demo Explicit and several other smaller intros) has already left our group and retired from the scene to work on his new project oldskool.org, a tribute/nostalgia site dedicated to games of the early 1980's. Jim's new email address is trixter@oldskool.org Pim (graphics artist for the Escape and Freedom CDs, as well as a contributor to several intros and web images) will go inactive at the same time as the archive. His plans are to release his never before released work on a scene CDROM project. He will finish up his Computer Science degree at the University of Nijmegen in The Netherlands next year, and will continue with his small company. You can reach Pim at mun@wxs.nl Personally, I plan to complete my new faster-than-light warp drive and sail to the third moon of Zenthrax on the outer fringes of the Pangalaxian Empire, where I will be reunited with my r3 brethren. On approximately 01 Nov 1998 according to your primitive Julian Earth calander, I will reachable through terrestrial email at r3cgm@rworld.org As a result, the archive will be dismantled as soon as possible. All html pages will be deleted. The search engine will cease to function. The /incoming directory will be cataloged, emptied, and removed. All sites being web-hosted under /info will find new homes. Our mirror sites will no longer be resolvable by (country-code).hornet.org. In the near future, there will be a "final" version of the archive. At this point, there will be no web interface. We can not shut down the archive quickly. We are the primary host for several large online documentation projects and must give the maintainers of them a chance to move somewhere else. We also can not, in good conscience, end the archive with a full upload directory. For the first time in perhaps 5 years we will have every file moved out of /incoming. Those of you who know me personally realize that I do not like loose ends. I like closure. I feel an obligation to shut down the archive properly. No, the end of The Hornet Archive will be a grueling, painful, extended process (just kidding!). Ironically, we have not been able to sell off all of our Hornet Underground and Hornet MODs CDROMs. They will outlive the archive itself. There are still at least a couple hundred of each left. See http://www.cdrom.com under "Games and Entertainment" for more details. When the archive has reached its final state, I will put a copy of our MASTER.SDD database file online. To all those would-be flat ascii file hackerz, do with it as you please. After backups of the archive have been made, the files will officially be transfered over to the folks at scene.org. What they will call the new archive I couldn't guess. Provided this new host keeps the data, they are allowed to do with it as they wish. After this transfer is complete, I will rm -rf * /pub/demos. Hopefully, the scene.org maintainers will set up a new archive quickly. After that, I will mirror this archive back to our server on ftp.cdrom.com (we might as well take advantage of our bandwidth as long as no work is required). Hornet Archive mirror sites will then become scene.org mirror sites. I notified several people at least a month ago about the end of the archive. Fortunately, the "PC Demos Explained", "PC Demo Fan Club", "Zen of Tracking", "GFX Zone", and Future Crew pages have all found new homes. The URLs to the new locations will be posted on the main page of our archive as they become available. Update your bookmarks as soon as possible since there won't be a "main page" of the archive much longer. The "Music Contest" and "Hornet Archive Memories" pages will be moving to a new domain called rworld.org. I am setting up this new domain with a friend of mine from University (r3mdh). After the new machine is up, I will remap the DNS entry for www.hornet.org to point to rworld.org, and set up a virtual host so that you get to the correct location. This will happen in about 2 months. Music Contest may or may not be over. It is the single scene activity I have not necessarily given up. Right now, I would estimate about a 60% chance of MC7 happening. Just wait 8 months and find out. And now as an added bonus for having read this far, you will uncover the answer to the longest-held secret about The Hornet Archive. : > Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 11:08:23 -0400 : > From: Eric Johnson : > To: r3cgm@cdrom.com : > Subject: Re: Fwd: hornet question : > : > Several years ago, we decided to officially name our archive "The Hornet : > Archive" as a direct result of the machine name hornet.eng.ufl.edu. Mann - r3cgm@cdrom.com : > : > Technical Supervisor, Webmaster : > Walnut Creek CDROM - http://www.cdrom.com : > : Well, I am afraid you may not find the story as exciting as you wish. : When UF Engineering Computer Services was founded we were given a block : of 20 or 30 IP addresses on the campus backbone network (128) this was : about 1990ish. At the time we didn't manage the reverse pointers and : putting names to IP addresses was kind of a "claim" on them back then. : So one afternoon we (That being Me, Brad, Phil and Andy) brainstormed up : some names. We didn't really have a theme, other then that the names : were mostly un-vulgar. (Frenulum slipped in there somehow ;) Many were : named after our cats, Another theme that came and went quickly was : insects. We came up with the names, and as equipment came in it got : assigned to the next available named IP address. : : As time progressed we moved to new locations. We got our own subnet and : control of the DNS for it. But the names moved with the machines, and : the theme of "no theme" stuck with us until I left ECS in 1992ish... : : That is how hornet came to be hornet. : : E Before I sign off, I'd like to give sincere thanks to the countless people who have helped with the archive over the years. I would have preferred to thank people individually, but the list was growing too quickly and would surely have been missing important names. To all those brave souls who authored web pages for the archive, assisted in the drudgery of moving uploads out of /incoming, typed their fingers to the nub with email feedback, and reviewed new songs, demos, code, and graphics, I thank you whole-heartedly. Your efforts were successful in bringing together the best place to get scene files. I'd like to repeat something that Dan Wright said in the final issue of DemoNews: "Oh yeah, one last thing. If you find that you are the last one left please close the door on your way out." >From my interview in that same issue; "I like closure, not loose ends. I'd much rather say something like 'OK folks, it's a wrap.' instead of 'See you next week!'... with that next week never arriving." OK folks, it's a wrap. Christopher G. Mann Snowman / Hornet 22 Sep 1998 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Nephoo's corner! Hi I want to say some last words about my "conflictable" rumours about Szum. LAST COMMENTS ABOUT SZUM/FLEUR and DRAGON. Ok. At first I want 2 say big sorry 2 Szum. I didnt want to broke your feeling with these rumours. But you know that on the scene are flying some stupid false rumours and you cannot control it. I heard some serious and some stupid rumours. I wrote this all and send to Psychic Symphony. I should foresee that you will demand some kind of protest, but you know I didnt wanted to broke our friendship. So I wrote this word "stolen" in inverted commas so I didnt take this serious. Big sorry once again. DRAGON #4 - My opinion. Some day ago I met Binar and copied Dragon #4 from his harddisk. Disk magazine kicked my ass, so I have to write some words about this magazine. As I said this is fourth issue of this marvelous magazine and this time whole Dragon stuff really shocked me. At start cool covers and beatifull panels. After a few minuts of reading I can say that it is the best magazine in Poland. I dont care about my corner opinion. This isnt realy important for scene folks. But whole rest is very good. We have many good articles and the best of them were translated into english corner. Yes, there presents English corner, but this is the weakest part of this mag. Pure, circa 20 articles arent strong reason to download it for foreign dudes. But I hope this will change in future. I heard some rumours that in future will be ENGLISH only version of this mag. I hope that. But to do it Dragon staff needs your SUPPORT. Maybe next issue, will be more interesting for foreign readers. Nephoo. RPG/FANTASY corner co-editor in Dragon Magazine. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 30 minutes GFX compo! After 56 hours of partying, ASSEMBLY '98 is over. I for one had a great time eventhough I came out througly exhausted. Still, the experience of organizing such a mammoth is absolutely thrilling. All competition entries can be downloaded from ftp.assembly98.net (an alias for ftp.scene.org). The ASSEMBLY '98 website is still available at www.assembly98.net. Here are some highlights that pop into my mind: Schedule held! The party schedule has never held this well. All compos (save for the outdoor soccer compo) started EVERY TIME RIGHT ON TIME! That is, precisily on the same minute the schedule said the compo should start it started. Eventhough e.g. our GFX compo organizer's taxi had a car crash and he had to stay behind to be a witness. The reason why the outdoor compo was late was that somebody broke into the car of the one of the outdoor organizers and stole everything including our footballs! Very cool entries! I saw some absolutely cool entries. A few that come to my mind were Barry the Orange (the Animation compo winner) and Misu & Kisu (the 2nd in the anim compo), Trauma's PC demo winner, Nerve Axis's Relic (Amiga demo compo winner) Complex's and Digital Nerd's Java compo entries and of course Hannu & Kerttu 2000 (the 2nd in the PC demo compo). I really rolled on the floor laughing when I saw Hannu & Kerttu 2000 for the first time. Party network rocked! Besides a few glitches here and there the party network really rocked the place and everything beyond it! The peak rates of our traffic to/from outside of the partyplace were over 56 MBPS! On average the rate was around 14 MBS. During the weekend our website gathered over 2.4 million hits. Very very loud party Unfortunately the party has evolved to the point where everybody brings their own stereos and some of the guys bring systems that could easily be fitted to a disco or a small concert hall. And everybody is competiting with everybody else to get his music heard. This has lead to the fact that it is way too noisy in the party hall. Next year we will use decibel meters to restrict the noise levels. Of course we will once again have free earplugs. Great organizing! I really have to thank all organizers at the party place. They all really threw everything they got and them some into the work they did and so made the whole event a success. Eventhough I and Pehu might be the ones that are most visible it is really the guys who aren't that make the difference at the party place. The better they do their job, the less you will see them. Our thanks go out to them. Visitors! I was very happy to see visitors from such far away countries as Brazil, Japan, Australia and the United States. Eventhough most of the visitors (85%) come from Finland, the atmosphere was quite international. Over all there were approximately 3000 visitors at the party place. Thank you all for visiting ASSEMBLY '98 and we hope meet you all again at ASSEMBLY '99! - Abyss / Future Crew & ASSEMBLY Organizing ---------- ------| 14.END |--------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Another week has passed!
